kennysarmy Posted April 1, 2022 Posted April 1, 2022 Hi all, Can anyone recommend a decent solidly built tablet we can issue to a couple of PE staff so they can hop on the WiFI and do their lesson registers in Bromcom, seems overkill to supply them with Apple iPads (which is of course their preference!)
Aprice Posted April 1, 2022 Posted April 1, 2022 iPads would be my suggestion, every alternative I've seen in the schools I've worked in ended up in the back of the IT office covered in dust. I just don't think any of the Android tablets are worth while, just seem to cause more issues than they are worth and get abandoned. Plus you can manage the iPads and lock them down easily with something like Mosyle so they stay in a usable state.

Especially if you utilise something like the free version of Mosyle or already have an existing MDM in place. Possibly an option to get refurbished older gen iPads? My only experience with tabs other than iPads was at my previous place, where site guys at each school were provided with a tablet. Being support staff they were given android tablets, while teachers/seniors had iPads. After they were handed out, I only ever saw one out of the 4 provided being used and I certainly tried my best to not groan whenever they required assistance with it. Required quite forceful jabbing.
2ilent8cho Posted April 1, 2022 Posted April 1, 2022 I would say get a basic iPad, education price without VAT should be between £230 and £240. The iPad (like iPhones) generally have a decent support lifecycle. The iPad Air 2 from 2014 is still fully supported with the latest iOS, how long before that Galaxy Tab stops getting fixes? Apple even still occasionally release updates for the older devices stuck on iOS 12 such as iPad mini 2 and iPad Air 1st Gen.
the_quick Posted April 1, 2022 Posted April 1, 2022 If you are already G suite school, android tablets work quite well with Work Profile. We use them for staff in PE and they replaced older IPads. No complains from staff - We use Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10"

Well they’re 8 years old at this point as a design. What Android tablet is still supported/has aged as well? The Samsung tablet you mentioned is the same price as the new iPad Air on John Lewis, and based on the track record of Samsung tablets vs Apple tablets I know which one I think will be useful and supported for longer. msi_school Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 Many years ago I worked at a school that used iPod touches for PE to do registers, they were rubbish for most things due to the small screen but could pull up a register and then go in a pocket which the PE staff loved, all the real work was done on a PC in the office.
mrstrong Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 We have a few of the samsung galaxy tabs. I tried to set up in gsuite (for free) with work profile but was soon in a world of pain. Ended up just configuring each one manually (also slow and painful!) and now just let staff manage themselves. (e.g. give them a google account for play store). Android were bought as they were "cheaper than an ipad" to save money but false economy in my opinion. Got to admit new ipads with DEP and MDM just work.

The ipad mini has a screen size of 8.3-inch, so the M10 Plus is on the large size for our requirement... 1
