skunk Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Shall I be the first to ask the fateful question? Has anyone applied the June update yet and what did it break?
StewartKnight Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 oh heck! I'm still fixing the May "fix", by having to reinstall .net 1.1 AND .net 2 on laptops!!!!!
mrtechsystems Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Yeah still installing .net Framework Go ahead break it then let us know how you fix it lol Not for me at the moment
joe90bass Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 oh heck! I'm still fixing the May "fix", by having to reinstall .net 1.1 AND .net 2 on laptops!!!!! No to the June update, waiting for LEA to do that @ Stewart, I thought it was just me who had those problems, glad I'm not alone
Jake Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Ever since we put the May update and .net 2 on, our SIMS has been going ludicrously slow. Especially when trying to open My Marksheets etc...it can take 5-10mins to open it.

Jake Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 It certainly is, prior to this update the my marksheets section would open in a matter of several seconds
zag Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I accidentally installed the June update last night, been a nightmare installing the infrastructure update on all the machines but no problems with the actual release. We only usually install the major updates here after Capita have consistently messed up patches and updates over the last few years.
FN-GM Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Well its been abit of both with us. We updated it and it broke! The client software updated but not the database. Once the database was updated using the dbupdate tool we was away. All of our clients updated fine when we normally have problems and sims seems to be faster.
dhicks Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Has anyone applied the June update yet and what did it break? No complaints so far, except for three machines with out-of-date .net framework versions (which should have been updated anyway, obviously, so at least I get to know which ones were out of date). Do still need to update FMS. Hey, maybe we should start some kind of rota? Have a different person each month who gets to be the one who installs the update and tells the rest of us if it's okay or not... -- David Hicks
teejay Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 I haven't even installed the May update yet:rolleyes: Got copies of both the SIMS and FMS databases at Capita for them to resolve problems. FMS we've suddenly had 5 year old statements appear in the reconciliation and with SIMS it keeps randomly adding extra teachers in Profiles reports. Don't want to install another update till they've fixed the problems.
zag Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 The client on the server failed to update, can I just run the simsapplicationsetup on the server?
FN-GM Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Didn't try it to be honest. But it happened to all clients so i dont think that would sort the issue. It was a database issue.
Gatt Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 The only issue I had with the June update was with our TS.. SIMSLoad failed to find the updated files... it eventually did so no problems really.
Kitkatninja Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Will be doing it this weekend, as I didn't want anyting to go wrong for our exams/admin ladies who are doing reports at the mo -Ken
dhicks Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Has anyone applied the June update yet and what did it break? Ooh, ooh, I got one, I got one! Anyone seen this error message before (comes up when trying to start the Exams module on a recently updated workstation - every other workstation seems to run the exams module okay): I'm now uninstalling-and-reinstalling SIMS on the workstation to see if that sorts the problem. -- David Hicks 1
dhicks Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 I'm now uninstalling-and-reinstalling SIMS on the workstation to see if that sorts the problem. Nope, that didn't fix it. Time for a new PC... -- David Hicks
apeo Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Oh dear.. havent seent that one.. Is that recently updated with June Update?
apeo Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Found this on Capita Support: KB62140 - Automation Error when accessing Exams Organiser Created 06/11/2006 Last Updated 04/12/2007 Affected Products Examinations Organiser Notes Automation Error when accessing Exams Organiser Unable to log into Exams Organiser Happening on one workstation Additional Notes This happens when Microsoft Updates have not been run on the affected workstation. We recommend that the Windows Updates are run regularly. Advice 1. Run a Windows Update on the affected machine via Internet Explorer - Tools | Windows Update 2. Uninstall Sims Infrastructure via Add/Remove Programs 3. Install Sims Infrastructure by running e.g. S:\SIMS\SETUPS\SimsInfrastructureSetup.exe 4. Locate the SIMS .net folder and rename this to SIMSold. 5. Run SIMSApplicationSetup.exe 1
dhicks Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Is that recently updated with June Update? Yep. All other workstations seem fine (so far...), it's just this one that's causing problems. The workstation has now been updated with Windows XP Service Pack 3 and all the updates that Windows Update can provide, although it wasn't when SIMS was first upgraded, causing SIMS to give an error message about the installed version of the .net framework. I wonder if that might be causing the problem? Either that, or my first guess would be something to do with the exam results data that gets read in from the "examin" folder (formats changed?). -- David Hicks

The workstation has now been updated with Windows XP Service Pack 3 and all the updates that Windows Update can provide, although it wasn't when SIMS was first upgraded, causing SIMS to give an error message about the installed version of the .net framework Is it possible they've accidentally made Exams require .net 3? That supportnet article would be much more helpful if they told you which update was causing it to barf so we don't have to install world+dog. We often have to put these updates out straight after release to fix existing urgent problems, so I'm enjoying sitting back and waiting for c0ckups to be fixed this time before I lay waste to our SIMS workstations! All our workstations should be on .net v2 by now 'cos May needed it.
dhicks Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Is it possible they've accidentally made Exams require .net 3? No, the workstation now has every single Windows update, ever, installed on it, and still refuses to load the Exams module - SIMS has gotten itself confused somewhere along the line, the easiest option is going to be to simply wipe the workstation and reinstall everything. To be fair, this should have been done before anyway - after all, it's not unreasonable for a Windows-based application to expect an up-to-date version of Windows. -- David Hicks
Sylv3r Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Ooh, ooh, I got one, I got one! I tended to logon as myself with full administrative rights on the machine and run Exams Organiser as me and it works fine. Then when I log off and the Exam officer logs on it works fine for them - it sounds to be a permissions issue but I can't think what, the exams officer has full rights to the SIMS folder on the workstation. 1
sahmeepee Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 it sounds to be a permissions issue but I can't think what, the exams officer has full rights to the SIMS folder on the workstation. Users need a few things on top of rights to the local SIMS folder. Have a dig around in the contents of simSperm.bat to see what it tweaks: simsperm.bat - Google Search That said, the May release of FMS also needed write access to system32 which was an unexpected surprise from our friends at Capita! AFAIK there isn't an FMSperm.bat, and if there was I suspect it would open up more than I'd be happy with. 1
