It's a good period of history to look at in a tv show. 2000 years or so from Sauron teaching the elves the secrets of ring-craft to the fall of Numenor. I imagine they'll truncate the latter half of the second age and fit it all into four or five seasons. Providing they spend BIG money on it (and they'll have to) it should look amazing!

It needs to match up to that and the events of the second half of the second age are on a far more significant scale than what we saw in the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies. Doing it proper justice will be expensive!

Its a guaranteed five season committment with at least $1bn being spent on the production in total. Yes, the report is $465m for Season 1, but you also have to remember they'll wrap all of the pre-production costs into Season 1 too, so the following seasons will appear cheaper. They've moved to a UK base for European location filming too, so that might reduce costs further (there is also probably a big chunk of that $465m gone on Covid protections and costs out of the production's control) It'll still average out at $25m an episode for 40 episodes and considering they have no "big name" actors like the Marvel Disney+ shows (which cost about the same) it should all go on screen. LeMarchand Posted July 15, 2022 Posted July 15, 2022 I have to say, despite having been a GRRM fan since finding "Dying of the Light" (his debut novel) in the bargain bin of a newsagent whilst finding Tolkien's prose turgid, I'm far more stoked for this than "House of the Dragon". Heck, "Willow" looks more appealing than "House" and I wasn't that into the film!

Yes, the locations look amazing, some of the visuals are fantastic - I'm a little concerned at what the plotline is, and treatment of some of the characters appears.... more than a little sus. Some of the interviews from the cast and crew set my teeth on edge.... I am reserving judgement until I see it - I'm being cautiously optimistic, but also not holding my expectations too high. 1

Haven't listened to it for decades as I originally had it on tape. Still think it's the best adaptation Not sure about the TV Series, I'm sure it will go on the list along with everything else, but Sandman is next!

Used to listen to it in the car on the way to and from my grandparents (they lived about 100 miles away and we used to go and visit during school holidays). And yes, Looking forward to watching Sandman, that's on my list too! 1

I've watched the first episode and started the second, but I'll have to watch the rest after work. Initial thoughts.... Fantastic set design. Gorgeous music (not surprising, given Howard Shore was involved, even if it was only for the main title). Costuming....questionable to bad, but forgivable as it's consistently questionable to bad for each character... As for the rest - well, I can't blame the actors, they're doing what they can with the script they're given. I like Nori, I hope she will be a main character. But the script. Oh, the script. It's everything we were worried about and more. Galadriel is turned into some sort of MarySue character with a Karen complex. Now, obviously I've not finished watching both episodes, and the first episode of any new series is always a bit questionable, so I will give it a few more episodes before I make my final decision on it, but yeah - that's my opinion on it so far. 1

I didn't have a problem with the costumes apart from the translucent dress shot of a young girl though I'd rather there weren't so many story strands, or that they had been introduced over more eps so that we spent more time with the different groups at the start.

I agree with the numerous story strands, though sadly that seems to be a common theme amongst modern 'fantasy/sci-fi' programmes. I remember watching the first few GoT episodes wondering how, exactly, the stories of the various groups of people were actually going to be relevant to each other (I hadn't read the books beforehand). Luckily for LoTR I know a little bit more so am able to connect a few more of the dots behind the scenes. Overall, loving the series so far - it's pretty much exactly what I expected it to be.
