Koldov Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Just had an email from a teacher requesting Flash be installed on his laptop as he wishes to use this resource: Ancient Greece - The British Museum Obviously I fired back an email with the standard response... But on a serious note, does anyone know of a similar resource I could point him to (and save him crawling the internet and clicking on random things)...? 2
Ironside Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Ruffle | Flash Player emulator written in the Rust programming language Might be suitable, sandboxes the content so it doesn't act as a security risk - in theory anyways
synaesthesia Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 "Ruffle puts Flash back on the web, where it belongs" *confidently decides to ignore it* 2

But on a serious note, does anyone know of a similar resource I could point him to (and save him crawling the internet and clicking on random things)...? Is there a specific part of the site that uses Flash or am I missing something? Im using Microsoft Edge and definitely dont have flash installed and the site seems to open just fine.
paulkerton Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 We had a request for Flash last week too. They've had 5 years. 5 YEARS. 2
Koldov Posted December 8, 2021 Author Posted December 8, 2021 Thanks, appreciate it - but I'm really trying to avoid any kind of alternatives in trying to get the Flash content to work and guide them to more up to date resources... A struggle we all know only too well I guess... "I bought this CD-ROM of Encyclopedia Britannica in 1985 can you make it work"...
StevieM Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 (edited) Flash????? Aaaaaaarrrrgggghhh!! (Sorry, someone had to do it!) Didn't realise that site relied so heavily on Flash. It's one that our Year 3 classes have used, in the past, so I'll expect similar requests. EDIT: That site is so out of date it needs it's own museum. It's not even Adobe Flash, it asks you to install, it's Macromedia Flash! Edited December 8, 2021 by StevieM 2

Yes, if you choose a sub-heading on the left (Acropolis) and then the next sub-heading (Story) you are presented with this...
ICTDirect_Dave Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Ancient Greece - Staff Room Just look at the requirements! This site hasn't been updated in quite some time! 1
paulkerton Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 This site hasn't been updated in quite some time! Which shows how old the teaching resources are!
rush_tech Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Yes I had a similar request last week different site. To which I replied it's not going to work! That looks like a flash game
networkmangler Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 We have a subscription to Doddle learn Instead of converting all their resources they have released a browser so that you can still run their flash content: Doddle Flash Browser - Doddle Learn They say they are working on converting their resources but it's been almost a year and we are still having to use this browser
StevieM Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Ancient Greece - Staff Room Just look at the requirements! This site hasn't been updated in quite some time! What kind of response do you think we would get if someone emailed the 'technical support contact'? 2
ICTDirect_Dave Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 What kind of response do you think we would get if someone emailed the 'technical support contact'? Probably a "This mailboxis no longer monitored". We should all send a message today though.
DaveJ2717uk Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Had the same issue, not with that site but a teacher using some ancient boardworks powerpoints and wondering why the embedded flash parts wouldn't work....... Explained politely as to why it wouldn't work.
Koldov Posted December 8, 2021 Author Posted December 8, 2021 Which shows how old the teaching resources are! Thing is I don't think Ancient Greece has changed much either... there are many resources (especially the fundamentals of things like History, Science, Maths) where the actual content will never need to change only the format in which it is produced/displayed, so I kind of do understand teachers relying on tried and trusted resources... I know we should all be flying through the Acropolis with VR headsets by now, but we are not there yet by a long shot... What kind of response do you think we would get if someone emailed the 'technical support contact'? Probably a "This mailboxis no longer monitored". We should all send a message today though. I've suggested to the teacher that he might like to try and start a dialogue with them and point out how useless the resource is in the modern day world of the Internet.... Whois says the domain was registered in 2004, so I imagine the site was created then and left 'as is' ever since....
paulkerton Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Thing is I don't think Ancient Greece has changed much either... Our understanding changes all the time though. As it's "Macromedia Flash" that site is at least 16 years old - I bet a lot of our understanding has changed in that time.

JJonas Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Direct them to this https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/end-of-life.html
paulkerton Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 I mean Pluto isn't even a planet anymore... I bet you've got teachers out there with resources saying that we have 9 planets still. Flash animations included! 1
Cat_Jam148 Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 Probably a "This mailboxis no longer monitored". We should all send a message today though. Was worth a try! 3
Ironside Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 "Ruffle puts Flash back on the web, where it belongs" *confidently decides to ignore it* It is a bit of a shame that Flash went away IMO, lots of online media is lost as a result - had to be done for security, but I still miss it. Stuff like Ruffle is interesting and if it can used in professional environments instead of just to play flash games that'd be very useful.
Scifigirl Posted December 8, 2021 Posted December 8, 2021 If you have Clicker in any form you may be able to get resources from Learning Grids. There is also loads of bits on the nat geo kids site https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/?s=ancient+greece&post_type= and probably a few others - depending on your students age. 1
Koldov Posted December 8, 2021 Author Posted December 8, 2021 (edited) Was worth a try! Only just noticed it was an ac.uk domain for the email address... On the other hand, the main site seems to have 'moved with the times' and is well up (or 'down' as the kids would say) with the socials... Edited December 8, 2021 by Koldov
