Streaming video providers which are generally acceptable in UK schools

Is there a list or any recommendations of streaming video players whose profile is such that UK Schools would deem them acceptable?

 

I have created a collection of several thousand GCSE maths videos within an application for teachers and require a suitable player that affords some download protection too.

 

I have heard of wistia.com and stremaingvideoprovider.com but would appreciate some insight on this.

Is this for your own content? If you have Office 365 then there's Microsoft Stream or whatever they call it now! It's essentially like an internal YouTube.

Hi, yes its for my own content but because it is going to be a purchasable resource ( at a reasonable price), I needed a player that afforded some security from blanket download really

Anything that gives you your own (sub)domain to stream them from, so it can be easily unblocked

The only reliable way for it to work would for it to be accessible under your own domain name, as a lot of the bulk content video hosting sites (such as vimeo) would be filtered due to the other unsuitable content that they can host.

Vimeo is a very bad choice for education due to their total lack of safety controls for the site. There is nudity and erotic content hosted on the site, which cannot be blocked without blocking the site in total.

My work use White Rose Maths as a maths scheme. It uses private Vimeo video links behind a paywall, embedded video link inside a web page you can only get to once logged in to their paywall 'premium resource centre'.

 

Not ideal but perhaps and option.

Vimeo does have filters in place now, so as long as you provide them your externally facing IP addresses, they can provide you a filtered version of their site.

It's not perfect, and we still generally block it - but it is much better than allowing Vimeo without restriction!

for 3, http live streaming (HLS) is probably the way to go.

Yes we are currently hosting it ourselves but on Android devices, there appears to be no way of making download straightforward

I'm no longer in education but i have built platforms like this for my professional clients. The biggest cost going forwards is the bandwidth being used.

This is a hard one to achieve - almost all modern technologies have ways of being downloaded. There is a constant cat and mouse between apps like YT-downloader and YT, and many forks. If you make the site good enough at the right price point then people wont bother trying to copy them.

Agree - HLS based VOD is the way i've done this before.

 

If you have time and know how to code i can point you the right direction for a custom set up.

It does HLS, and I assume as it's a CDN it's just caching your server, so that's fine

Due to HTTPS it's only easy to block based on domain name, as the maths product videos aren't at maths.vimeo.com, but at vimeo.com, we can't easily unblock them.

 

If the cloudflare thing makes your videos appear to come from myeducationsite.com and not a domain that's also full of not safe for schools stuff, it won't get blocked.

How do you go about providing Vimeo with your external IP to get a filtered Vimeo? I've had a couple of requests about websites that host Vimeo videos which people want unblocking.
