SteveBentley Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 We use turnitin here, and I spend quite a bit of time training staff how to use it and helping to interpret the reports it produces. We mainly use it via the Blackboard integration building block, which takes away most of the admin headache. We find it very effective if it's used well, as part of an overall package of educating students about plagiarism, what constitutes it, how to avoid it etc, and where staff are willing to accept the limitations which such software has (mainly that it can't detect *everything*). What it's not so good for is just blindly throwing a batch of work through to catch out students who have plagiarised, it needs to be seen as one tool which is part of a process. Try to post relevant information to the topic next time. Always helps. Have seen turn-it-in in action during a school exchange, having said that, its very impressive software and quite a few bits of coursework were highlighted for attention, some obviously from previous coursework submitted, some directly from material, and even some from internet citations. You really need to sit down with various departments and ask them if its what they want, and if it is, cost shouldn't matter, after all its all about providing a fair and balanced education. 1
nadeem Posted January 7, 2010 Posted January 7, 2010 We use turnitin (TurnitinUK: Home: Welcome to TurnitinUK) via the moodle integration For me one advantage of this is the fact that a lot of UK FE/HE uses this and it checks against a shared database, also they certainly seem to have the biggest database of source material other than just web stuff (e.g. journals etc) The support team are also a nice bunch. Any detailed questions about it please just ask away. nLearning will usually give you a free trial account to play around with

If that helps. I can't give you any idea of whether it's good or not, but it can't be terrible if a University use it.
