Jcx500 Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 So Looking to replace my standard sky box with something I have a bit more control over. I’m thinking of going with a virtual opnsense appliance. Anyone got any recommendations on home kit ? Thanks
Davit2005 Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 (edited) I think Sky make it difficult for you to use any third party routers. Could be wrong but worth checking. If you can use the Sky modem as a Modem only then you could use most things behind it as a firewall. Personally a DrayTek, cheap pfsense/Netgate or a home build openwrt or something. Guess it depends if you want a i.e. WiFi solution too and what extras you want such as client VPN, vLANS etc. Lawrence Systems https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHkYOD-3fZbuGhwsADBd9ZQ has done a few comparisions over the years and maybe worth a look although they don't have much call for DSL over there. XiJ Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I’m using my Virgin in modem only mode and use a Mikrotik router. Much more control 1
timbo343 Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 (edited) I've got a draytek 2860 on a FTTP 150mbps linrle connected to 2 ruckus APs and it does the job. Edited August 9, 2021 by timbo343 1
Jcx500 Posted January 14, 2022 Author Posted January 14, 2022 Decided I’m going to get a supermicro box and run either opnsense or sophos xg
Andycat Posted January 14, 2022 Posted January 14, 2022 Is it possible if you have Sky Q? I've been told not, but would like too. I think the Q boxes form a mesh between them

Andycat Posted January 14, 2022 Posted January 14, 2022 The Sky Q boxes do form a mesh. So I think in that case I'm stuck with their router.
Foresthippy Posted January 14, 2022 Posted January 14, 2022 So I think in that case I'm stuck with their router. Or mesh with something else. I use Virgin router in modem mode, a tp-link router/wifi, and a plug in wifi extender (mesh type thing) upstairs.
Jcx500 Posted January 14, 2022 Author Posted January 14, 2022 Forgot to mentioned i've moved over to Virgin media now , so will just stick that in modem mode
Jcx500 Posted January 31, 2022 Author Posted January 31, 2022 Gone with TP link Omada in the end , interesting to see if it’s good as/ better than unifi
MatthewL Posted January 31, 2022 Posted January 31, 2022 pfsense, currently running mine on an old machine but going to look to migrate to a Netgate device. Although I am currently looking at Peplink routers to use with a 5G sim but they offer multi wan. You can configure your Sky box to talk to other wireless which works fine, done that at my brothers using a Netgate/Unifi wifi combination.

However, I purchased a MicroPC from Ali Express. It works great!
