dagda Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 Hi there I am currently looking at MDM options for a new rollout of 1:1 iPads, and would welcome any advice. My previous MDM experience has been with Meraki and LightSpeed. The MDMs I am currently considering are: Mosyle, Jamf, Impero and Securly. Does anyone have any particular recommendations or horror stories? Many thanks in advance
DalekSec Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 We use Mosyle, does everything we need it to for MacOS and iPadOS. We don't do 1:1 though only shared! Jamf is the best MDM hands down, but is also $$$! 2
Sydders01 Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 @dagda I have use Mosyle, Jamf briefly when it was called zuludesk and I don't know the current functionality since the change of name but it was brilliant and currently using meraki. Meraki pricing when your devices are above 100 units is not that friendly. I would have loved to used impero.. I would advice that whatever MDM you pick , make sure you pick something that gives you the ability to see the pupils IPADs remotely from your dashboard and your able to see their history for safe guarding purposes. 1
FragglePete Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 +1 for Mosyle. Using it here and at the primary I look after - works brilliant and cheap for what it does ($5.50 per device per year). Pete 1
kidpressingbuttons Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 (edited) Current trust has 4 schools running on Mosyle. Last school was full Apple all on Mosyle Edited June 3, 2021 by kidpressingbuttons 1
Rob_D Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 To throw another option into the mix, Filewave works well for us with apple devices. 1
StephenPink Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 Using Jamf School here (different product completely to Jamf Pro) - cheap, works pretty well. All MDMs seem to suffer from the same issues (having used AirWatch and InTune previously) when it comes to Apple stuff, and that is that they all rely on Apple allowing them do certain things. Got around 1500 1:1 iPads on there at the mo, and 30 iMacs. Having some weird issues with the iMacs though. 1
Securly_Marc Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 +1 for Securly...but I'm sure you knew that already! Let me know if you need any help from me @dagda when looking at Securly and we can get a trial in place if you haven't already. Thanks, Marc 1
Mr.Ben Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 If you have M365 licensing, Intune is a basic MDM for iPads, certainly good enough for our Trust! 2
dagda Posted June 3, 2021 Author Posted June 3, 2021 Thanks Marc. Securly was pretty high on my list, as we currently use GSuite as our productivity platform. Can I PM you?
dagda Posted June 3, 2021 Author Posted June 3, 2021 Many thanks for all the input so far, it's all very much appreciated. I have a follow-up question for any Jamf School users. To what degree are you tied in to iCloud etc? I can transition the students to a different cloud solution easily enough, but the teachers are another matter! It's taken the better part of 10 years to get them using GSuite and any change to that might end up in a full scale revolt!
Securly_Marc Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 Hey @dagda Of course, PM me on here or message me at [email protected] and we can answer any questions you have. Thanks, Marc 1

To what extent do you mean being tied to iCloud? iCloud is there to backup devices, works in the background everytime you plug the device in to charge it? G Suite apps and Google Drive works excellently on iOS devices as well? 1
dagda Posted June 3, 2021 Author Posted June 3, 2021 Hi @Brimstone On their website Jamf state "With the Jamf School Student app, students can manage their own iPad devices. They can install apps approved by the school and use documents stored in their personal iCloud drive." We are currently using GSuite as our email provider, productivity platform etc. I don't want to muddy the waters by using iCloud, if at all possible. So my question really is can the save location be altered to the student Google Drive folders instead?

The Jamf School student app is avery basic workflow tool, personlly I would just use the self service function so students can download themselves the apps approved for them. You wouldn't use Jamf School Student app for assigning or saving work for students best to use a more powerful tool such as Showbie with your G Suite tools. There is still a place however for iCloud backups for the iPads, with Managed Apple ID's and 200GB 's of free storage it's by far the easiest way to ensure student content on the device gets backed up. 2
Tom_P Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 Hi @dagda, I was wondering if you made a decision on an MDM? I am currently going through the same process and looking to trial Lightspeed and Impero. 1
DrBeaker Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 How is Mosyle with the various devices, Android, iPad etc for those using it? Always found MDM's lacking and seemed they favoured one over the other.
Alis_Klar Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 I have found MDM coverage for Android terrible. We have 20 donated Daily Mail Samsung A7's and need a MDMD/Safeguarding solution for them. SecURLy is looking good. Lightspeed coverage of Android is woeful. https://help.lightspeedsystems.com/s/article/MDM-Features-by-OS?language=en_US
xicor Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 I'm using meraki as its free from LGFL, did you have a bad experience with meraki ? Tefters Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 Hi @Tom_P, I'll PM you Evening Dagda, Anychance you could PM me the results from your MDM decision please. Currently in the 1:1 iPad thought process for 1500 devices. Thanks!
KK20 Posted November 5, 2021 Posted November 5, 2021 (edited) we use manageengine MDMplus. That isnt on your list though. We ran the free version for a long time (20 license I think). Support is good, documentation a bit light but gets the job done. I had no issues doing the usual - lock down ipads, set up multiple "profile" logons, link with 365, roll out software to classes etc. Edited November 5, 2021 by KK20
