Jobos Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 I need recommendations for a B&W laser printer which will be used for printing OMR sheets and other SIMS documents and is to replace a HP 1200 which has just died. I would like the printer to have a small footprint as it will need to fit on the desk.

srochford Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 Kyocera FS1100 or FS1300D (latter does duplex as standard) Both solidly built, cheap to run (<1p per page), enviromentally good (no drum to throw away when you change toner; initial packaging has minimal plastic) and quite cheap to buy.

Other than that, we mainly use Kyocera 1030D. The problem I find with this smaller model printer is that the toner cartridges don't last particularly long. We have several HP 1012 in offices here and that is the case.
dgsmith Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 We have just replaced a Brother 5170 (not that old either) with a HP P3005n for SIMS/office use. Although we looked at the HP P2015, we figured it would be best spending the extra on the printer itself and getting far better cost-per-page economy, which we do on the toner with the p3005. Although we have never used Kyocera, I do believe in recent years they have improved dramatically, however we're a brother/hp school, particularly leaning more towards HP in recent years.

sidewinder Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Watch out with the 2015 for the bug that makes it keep reverting to DHCP randomly. Gets pretty annoying. Apparantly there is a firmware update now, not sure if it fixes it

I'm not at my desk at the moment, so I don't know what driver and firmware I am using, but I will find out.
contink Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Re: the firmware issue.. You could just set a reservation in DHCP so the printer will pick up the correct IP even if it does revert.

I have a brother 4150 at the moment, which is very good but costs too much, is there one that id built for the office environment but has cheaper running costs. Many thanks. Also one that sims likes
