Hi folks,

 

Been a while since I built my previous home desktop (12 years in fact!), so I'm after some component advice. Despite the age of the desktop it has a modular PSU that I bought within the last 5 or so years, when the last one failed. I'm also looking to reuse the case, which was also changed in the last 5 or so years.

 

I use it as a media server and for browsing. I might fit a decent graphics card at some point for gaming, but at the moment I just want a reasonably fast machine for Internet browsing and a bit of app use. I'm also going to get a new SSD for the OS, as the current one's currently showing a health of 6% in Crystal Disk Info (it must be coming up on 10 years old).

 

So, I'm thinking of updating with the following:

Go AMD, you will not be disappointed. Only issue being is you'll need to buy one with intergrated graphics if you don't have a GPU.

 

Also you have DDR3 RAM with a DDR4 Mobo and CPU, 3100Mhz is the sweet spot for AMD chips for price/performance atm.

 

NVMe looks good though, i'd go samsung if possible tho they do the best.

My mistake, that's actually DDR4. What would be an equivalent AMD CPU?

The processor you listed doesn't have an integrated GPU, so you need to get a dedicated GPU or switch to a non-F CPU. As dalek said, I'd be going for an AMD CPU with dedicated graphics, even if it's just a £20 quadro card from ICT Direct until gaming cards come back to sensible pricing!

Is it the 10700K that has the integrated GPU? I'm way out of touch with all this.

K does have intergrated yes, if going AMD you're looking for a model with G on the end.

 

No one is really going Intel atm unless you need something that is only supported on Intel CPUs like Thunderbolt*

 

*Yes i know you can get thunderbolt on AMD now but it's much rarer!

Yes, I have an old Radeon card in the current desktop, and I can't get drivers newer than 2015. Suffice to say it's not great with Win 10, regular crashes! Part of the reason for wanting to update.

Wow, that will be old! AMD did final drivers in 2015 for 4xxx series (which I’ve found to be pretty stable) and 5xxx and 6xxx weren’t long after. My 6950 is still going strong (even if the fan bearings are dying) and is rock solid stable.

 

Any old card will do for now. A cheap second hand 77xx or older R7 card if you can find one, will be on much newer drivers.

For Intel, the F cards have no integrated graphics, all others do. The K signifies that the CPU is unlocked for overclocking.

As for the the Quadro, I'd look at something like the NVS310 1Gb with dual displayport from @ICTDirect_Dave or maybe a K600 if you can find one.

I've checked and it's a 5800 HD. Frequently I get screen corruption, often so bad that I have to restart the machine.

Decent old card those. When that starts to happen though, it won’t be drivers - it’ll be years of heat cycles and failing cooling and subsequent damage to the components/GPU. My old 6870 did it after the original fan died.

 

No issues with the replacement 6950 (which was £20 - doubt you’d get one for that now!)

We've all sorts of quadro cards, ranging from a cheapo £20 option that will be fine to just get something on screen, to hefty £200 quoadros with 12GB RAM ideal for video and 3d work
