TechMonkey Posted April 28, 2021 Posted April 28, 2021 Securly - that's what we are talking about. Sorry, was just checking you weren't using a different cloud based filtering system as you hadn't mentioned Securly specifically and we had moved the conversation on to more general cloud filtering usage. Sorry for annoyance.
KK20 Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 dont forget to block DNS over TLS in your firewall or your little cherubs will happily use private DNS on android devices to bypass DNS filtering.
TheRobins Posted April 29, 2021 Author Posted April 29, 2021 My experience with Securly is that a) it works well but b) it is pretty inflexible. The safeguarding stuff in it is great, receiving notifications of worrying searches is very useful especially in these trying times. But, there are some aspects that I feel are missing. Eg. Regex rules. Reporting is a little bit limited too. I had an issue where I needed the details of Youtube videos a child had viewed. The site limits this to a certain number it'll list for you, after which I had to go to support and they sent me a spreadsheet - which obviously didn't then have the previews/titles etc... Another area I'd like to see better filtering for is importing URLs - at the moment I have to whitelist each individual video manually - there's no way to import a list of URLs. I tried sending a list to support a long while ago and nothing ever happened with it. Thanks for advice and tips. Hopefully these will not be much of an issue for us, We have just signed up for the system as part of our new connection so when its ready in August I will be able to have a look. At the moment we block YouTube for students anyway, apart from in computing lessons when we have Senso on for the IT teachers who monitor their screen activity like hawks and senso does a great job of logging everything. Its obviously an evolving product and lets hope they listen to their end users 1

kennysarmy Posted August 4, 2021 Posted August 4, 2021 We are currently evaluating both Securly and Lightspeed's cloud platform for filtering as and when our broadband contract comes up. We're definitely moving away from on-prem. Hi Paul, Wondered if you could update the thread on which product came out on top between Securly and Lightspeed for your cloud filtering?
paulkerton Posted August 4, 2021 Posted August 4, 2021 Hi Paul, Wondered if you could update the thread on which product came out on top between Securly and Lightspeed for your cloud filtering? We're still working on it, to be honest. Both are excellent. I personally think Lightspeed has the edge when it comes to Chromebooks in particular, but filtering it's very close between them. It's the extra services we're looking at, at this point. 1

Hi Paul, please can you elaborate on the edge that Lightspeed has on Chromebooks? We're a very Chromebook heavy Trust and trying to decide between the two.
techie17 Posted September 8, 2021 Posted September 8, 2021 We've rolled it out across our MAT of 28 schools a few months ago. It has certainly been a positive move from our previous platform (Sophos XG firewalls). The filtering itself has worked very well as you would expect. The big benefits for us have been around the fact that it is independent of our network so all devices are filtered, regardless of location. Secondly, it is so much easier to look at the logs, spot trends and identify potential issues compared to other platforms that I have used. As things stand, the move to Securly has been a positive one. What do you use for the firewall instead? All our sites Sophos XG's are up for renewal next year so it would be good to know what you now use.
paulkerton Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 Hi Paul, please can you elaborate on the edge that Lightspeed has on Chromebooks? We're a very Chromebook heavy Trust and trying to decide between the two. Honestly, it's just personal preference when it comes to interfaces. We are still in the middle of evaluating them (it takes a long time here) and I would honestly be happy with either product. For filtering there really is not much between them at all, if anything. It's really down to what products outside of that core filtering we're interested in. Those are decisions outside of my remit as I wouldn't be using those particular tools. 1
colacao82 Posted September 9, 2021 Posted September 9, 2021 Thanks for your response Paul. Much appreciated.
bulldogtech Posted September 29, 2021 Posted September 29, 2021 Is anyone here using Sophos MTR with Securly Classroom and Filtering? We are currently using Lightspeed and have issues with them working together due to the web filtering service running on all end users even though no policies or filtering is occuring with Sophos.
Wave9_Lee Posted September 30, 2021 Posted September 30, 2021 What do you use for the firewall instead? All our sites Sophos XG's are up for renewal next year so it would be good to know what you now use. For customers that want device-based filtering, we now offer Managed Sophos XG firewall and Lightspeed alongside. The costs of the XG come down because of the reduced licencing, so can often be cost-neutral. I.e. you can retain the firewall and advanced security features of the XG alongside the Lightspeed filtering. Single bill/single support desk etc Note; for your renewal, that XG is End Of Sale, and the new firewall is XGS -(more performance). cheers
