I'm not sure what the underlying logic is, nor the justification for this implementation, but Google seem pretty solidly set on pushing forward with the roll out. I'd guess there is some larger CP issue they are trying to get ahead of.

Hopefully they'll refine the implementation in the coming months to give Workplace accounts marked as over 18 access again.

We have recived this information that looks like Google are having a few issues and they hope to have it fixed in a few weeks time:

Google have implemented the restriction and the allocation of 18+/- to Workspace but not yet linked the two. In the coming weeks, these will be linked and teachers with 18+ allocation in your console will be able to access the video; for now, Google insists on passport or credit card authentication. We appreciate teachers will not want this linked to a work account but it is Google implementing this restriction. Hopefully by after half-term this will have been automated.

Let's hope it's sorted soon. I see no way I see to override it. OU is marked as over 18's but youtube is still asking for age verification with credit card.

This is the other end of criticisms Google get.

In this case they announced something and gave a date before it was truly ready and now you have delays like this... on the other hand they announce features as "coming soon" and don't give a date and then also get criticised for it.

It'll be fixed soon enough.

The criticism is because once again they've made changes without thinking of the consequences.

Stuff is just not joined up right now with Google.

The criticism should be passed to the people who passed the laws that made them have to rush to put something in place.

Do we want to pretend that Google are the only ones that have slipped up with an implementation in the past, or are we going to pretend Microsoft, Apple et al do it perfectly every time?

Google are on something of a roll at the moment with missteps relating to education.

The criticism is fair, Google, at the moment, are messing up regularly with their education products.

Thoroughly disagree. They're only implementing what they have to legally in this respect and are having a few issues with this one particular thing.

Otherwise, most of their products are not "messing up regularly" in the slightest. We aren't seeing the chaos of Apple's implementation of shared iPads or the multiple 365 data breaches and RDP attacks leaving schools ransomwared like Microsoft are we?

So YouTube doesn't work properly which is a direct result of their changes. They're big enough and had long enough to properly scope this out, implement and test it.

They recently made some kind of change to Chrome OS which is causing Chromebooks to completely fill their storage and then stop working properly - even after months they can't replicate this despite numerous schools on here replicating it and us seeing it even with single user devices.

They recently changed the default storage location for screenshots and screen recordings to on device on Chromebooks rather than Google Drive - a completely stupid change given the whole point of a Chromebook is to have everything cloud based.

These just off the top of my head.

From what I understand, YouTube is working as intended and content you can't access, you probably aren't licenced to access in school via YouTube anyway.

ChromeOS has always had gap in it capability that can only be filled by implementing local storage and local apps like Android/Windows/MacOS/iOS/Linux. This brings all the problems of the legacy OS's to the platform. These changes were clearly resisted by the ChromeOS team for years, but recently they have begun to buckle and now we are where we are.

Quite why screenshots specifically are now on local storage I don't know, but perhaps a significant proportion of Google Drive storage was taken up by these screen shots that are never reviewed?

It isn't working as intended, Google themselves have said that.

Chromebooks have always been cloud first and multi user, this is a retrograde step. Even if it was using lots of cloud space, Edu tenancies now have a limitation on the free amount of space and filling the on board storage leads to significant issues with the Chromebook not working properly once it's 100% full and it then stays 100% full.

Google isn't a single thing. Nor are public statements always the whole picture. There is conflict between the divisions of alphabet and also within the divisions. This is normal for any organisation of this scale. Sometimes things don't come out the way the consumer of the product wants. Perhaps things will swing back as per the public statement. But the open and free web is closing, and YouTube and Google Workplace have divergent goals.

The Chromebook thing is a retrograde step, but it is an inevitable result from ceding to the pressure to fill that gap between cloud first and legacy-like capabilities. I'm sure they will make it better, but unless they roll back to "cloud-only" we'll be bumping into this until all our devices are 128gb+ just like Windows and iOS.

TBH our Windows autopilot devices with 64Gb of SSD have just started to run out of space after a year in service with no maintenance. We're trying out Autopilot reset just now, hopefully it will keep them fresh. Was hoping that after five years of Windows 10, we'd be able to get a chromebook-like experience, but no, annual re-imaging remains a thing :( I can totally understand the frustration of Chrome OS IT staff to have this come crashing back round into their lives.

OK, now the dust has settled...

The OP being about Age-restricted video (based on Community Guidelines) not being allowed when signed in to an 'I am over 18' OU Google account in Google Workspace?

Does anyone know if there has been any movement on this?
