Aruba Switch CLI

Hello, I have a trial Aruba 2930F switch, I will probably do most admin through GUI but command line is necessary. I'm in the Aruba Central interface, select the switch and Actions/Console (also tried Putty) but stuck where to start, every command returns 'Invalid input'. e.g. something simple like setting the switch name:

 

Trial-Aruba-2930F-24G-PoEP-4SFPP# config

Trial-Aruba-2930F-24G-PoEP-4SFPP(config)# hostname Test-Switch

Invalid input: hostname

 

 

am I in the wrong place for CLI?

Do yourself a favour - assuming you have the choice, do NOT use aruba central for switches - it's a wireless system with the switch stuff thrown in shoddily afterwards and it just isn't ready for use even now. Understand you may not have a choice though if the trial is via HP.

Do use Putty rather than the inbuilt console.

Cant remember if hostname is a correct command but also need to be sure you're using the right command set - confusingly there's 2 for HP stuff, comware and procurve, and it's the latter you need. You probably need config rights. Type conf t.

I dont access cli through Web interface. Just plug USB micro into the device. Install putty on your computer. There are videos on YouTube explaining the process of accessing a switch through putty.

Try without the -, it needs to be in a ASCII string. Or wrapping with " ".

The text menu system on hp is quite nice, just do enable, then menu

HP/Aruba switches are different, but you can auto-complete with the tab like cisco. No need to do conf t (configure terminal) like Cisco.

 

That command should work even in that syntax at that prompt with the hash. To double check I have just tried on a 2930f running version WC.16.10.0012

 

Can you do a

show flash

and post the output here.

 

TBH we only ever use the CLI for HP/Aruba (ArubaOS) although that may change in the future.

 

Putty should work as long as you have the right cable for initial setup we generally use USB/Serial convertors as some of our switches only have the old 9pin serial console ports.

what we are (were) hoping is that Central gave us an overview of the switches, a quick way to manage them without browsing to individual IP's and a way to bulk admin them e.g. Add a VLAN to all at once. I dont know about the bulk VLAN admin bit but it does give an overview. There also seems to be a push to use templates if using Central but for 10 switches initially (only 30 max) it seems overkill.

 

I am still lost with the CLI stuff none of the documented commands work, but maybe as synaesthesia said its a different limited set as https://techhub.hpe.com/eginfolib/ne...t/ch03s03.html

what we are (were) hoping is that Central gave us an overview of the switches, a quick way to manage them without browsing to individual IP's and a way to bulk admin them e.g. Add a VLAN to all at once. I dont know about the bulk VLAN admin bit but it does give an overview. There also seems to be a push to use templates if using Central but for 10 switches initially (only 30 max) it seems overkill.

There are 2 different command sets as previously stated but I am pretty sure you should be running ArubaOS (ProVision)

 

I've never used Central we have 750+ HP/Aruba switches and either do things switch by switch or sometimes we use the HPE iMC solution.

 

If we roll out stacks of switches at a time I've often done powershell scripts that pull in from CSV, spit out a text file than paste that into the CLI as this can be done very easily and without needing a working network connection.

 

Common cli commands:

 

Example Create a vlan (quickest method with Provision)

 

conf

 

Switchname(conf)#vlan 111 name "vlan_111"

 

 

Example Set an ip address on a vlan (you need to be aware that if there is already an IP address configured for the vlan that will need to be removed first)

 

conf

 

Switchname(conf)#vlan 111 ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0

If it is anything like the Wireless IAPs, enrolling it to central hands configuration authority to the management platform. It's likely you wont be able to 'manually' update the running config.

 

I would have thought that the HP Partner that arranged the trial would be keen to provide the support you need. If you don't like the experience they aren't going to convert you to a paying customer, and a fleet of 2930's would be quite a lot of revenue to pass up.

I did not know that about Aruba Central, but then as I said we don't use it but this is valuable info as we may be looking to it.
