[TEAMS] Chat disabled for one specific teacher's classes

I've got one teacher who for the every one of the 'live lessons' they hold (meetings), the chat is disabled for their students.

 

As a school, we have the chat function turned on for students (and staff). The students are able to chat in other meetings.

 

The teacher and all the students in one of the classes completely uninstalled and reinstalled the Teams app, after having first tried signing out and signing in again.

 

I got one student to try using the web app, at which point they were able to send a message but the chat was disabled immediately after.

 

I added in our test student, and was able to chat perfectly fine in one of these meetings.

 

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this? Or what else we can try to get this resolved?

 

I believe the teacher is scheduling the meetings as standalone meetings, instead of in the Class Team itself. Is that likely to affect it?

 

Any help would be truly appreciated!

Like Boredguy said, the only way you can have the chat disabled for students is that if they have all been perm muted in the Manage Team area or you have it done by policy.

When muting the students there, it stops them for making conversations in the Posts area, replying to posts, and also chatting in the conversation in meetings.

Has the teacher/owner of the Team activated the Team?

 

If the Team has not been activated, we found that none of the students for that Team can use the chat function.

 

Go to the Teams tab (left navigation bar) - Find the Team in question - Click 3 dots next to Team name - Click Manage Team - If it needs activating, there will be an Activate button at the top

I have just heard back from the teacher, and I don't believe the students are muted.

 

Hmm I'm running out of ideas here.

 

Today i had a issue where a Student couldn't use the chat in a Live meeting, and that was because the Teams Client was out of date. It simply would not allow the student to type in the conversation box. But the box was there to type in.

 

I clicked on their icon at the top right and clicked "Check for updates" then it did its thing and asked me to refresh the client and it worked after that.

We had this, it's only when I dropped in myself as an owner of the team I noticed that all the students hadn't been invited yet.

 

Once all the students were Activated I believe this resolved the issue.

 

Worth checking.
