chekmate1984 Posted January 14, 2021 Posted January 14, 2021 Hi all Staff wants to remove first name visible to all students. This is synced from sims via Wonde. They have informed this is not something Wonde can do and its a google classroom configuration? is this correct if so how have you guys done this if you have? Is there a setting in Goole classroom to hide first name ? Thanks
CHiLL Posted January 14, 2021 Posted January 14, 2021 While not Google Classroom, we had the same request with Office 365. Our only option was to replace staff first names in AD with their first initial. Then when it's synced, it'll just show J Smith for example.
chekmate1984 Posted January 14, 2021 Author Posted January 14, 2021 Our user sync is done via LGFL. Maybe need to speak with them in that case see if the can make the change
3s-gtech Posted January 14, 2021 Posted January 14, 2021 I had to remove their first names from AD and wait for it to sync! Couldn't make it change in GC alone. Not sure what you'll do as using Wonde, as it syncs from your MIS.
Chaniel Posted January 14, 2021 Posted January 14, 2021 We use Google Cloud Directory Sync to make our users in G Suite which gets all the data from AD, rather than SIMS. In AD, we have "extensionAttribute1" set to be the users first initial. In the GCDS setup, we then sync "GivenName" based on "extensionAttribute1" rather than their AD Forename. This way we can have full names in AD, but sync only show their initial in G Suite. All fairly pointless though, our email addresses are [email protected]
j224 Posted January 14, 2021 Posted January 14, 2021 Is there a reason why they want to hide their first names?
chekmate1984 Posted January 14, 2021 Author Posted January 14, 2021 Staff dont wish to show first name to students. Might need to look at change sync from sims to active directory
paulkerton Posted January 14, 2021 Posted January 14, 2021 Staff dont wish to show first name to students. Might need to look at change sync from sims to active directory You'd need to find a way of defining the first letter of the name in SIMS, then pointing your sync tool to that as the first name. They will find out their first names anyway. Taking them off your online platforms is very much a King Canute kinda move. If we could find them all out in the 90s, the 2020s will be no different, digital or not.
localzuk Posted January 14, 2021 Posted January 14, 2021 One disadvantage of doing this is that the email address directory will be harder to use. We didn't bother trying anything like this here. Everyone has a first name. We publish them on our websites. Children are just told not to use them. 1
TwistedHelixis Posted January 14, 2021 Posted January 14, 2021 Could you use an alias added to the main user in G Suite???

When the students find out in our school, they have a little chuckle for a few seconds and then they move on. They're told to use Mr/Miss/Mrs when speaking to us.
