tomscaper Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Firsly did a search but was unable to find anything of the same nature, so appologies if this has been already discussed. Student are using our VLE, and are transfering work from home, they have office 2007 and we have 2003 here i have put the compatability pack on the system if the documents are opened from usb pen or network drive they open fine, but using our vle the docuement opening as a zip file, the students cannot save or right click from the web. does anyone have any ideas regarding this is the the vle itself, or is there someway to configure documents in IE to open in there relevant programs. Thanks

apearce Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Its all part of the office 2007 new standard. I use the zip feature all the time as all the images in your document are saved a png files in the file. Its the same for powerpoint (PPTX) If your using Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 it will allow you convert your docx file to a html page. Doesn't do images yet! rrichmond Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 From what I have seen, the users may find they can open the document just fine if they user firefox, left click on the link and open with word.
Michael Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 The schools I support use the same VLE, and I can re-create your problem. Using Word 2003 with the Compatibility Pack installed, I did Save As into docx format. Uploading the file worked correctly, but when downloading it came up with test.docx, compressed zipped folder. By clicking Open, I can then Save the docx file. I found a very similar problem with Sims report files, as they also came up as zipped file format and then become corrupted and unusable within Sims. I seem to re-call it was an issue with the proxy server from memory.

tomscaper Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 The problem is that at home they save them as docx as they have office 2007 but when it comes to open them, its as if in internet explorer 6 it doesnt recognise that docx is word 2003. I can save the files as i have right click access, we cannot let the students have this ability for other reasons, so for now they have email me the file and which i can convert and pass back to them. I tell them at home to save as .doc as that open in word by default Just tested this link Test document - test.docx - WordVisualizer did a search for any .docx and it opened under student logon, so it must be myclasses, does anyone know why this happens does myclasses need something set to recognise docx. Can anyone else confirm this with myclasses.

Yep, the VLE will be using the files 'magic' number to determine the file type rather than the extension or the mime type. It'll need patching to handle the special case of Office 2k7 and ODF documents where they are packaged in a zip but you don't want them to be handled as a zip file. I'd check your VLE providers site, it wouldn't suprise me if there wasn't already a patch out for this?
rdk Posted September 7, 2008 Posted September 7, 2008 We use myclasses and have had the same issue. I have been onto them (here in Australia at least) with no luck. Firefox works better at allowing the .docx fuiles to open if the user has the Office Compatibility Pack installed.
zag Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Good luck with that! We asked for a repeatable event in the netmedia vle's calendar for about 2 years and eventually gave up to use sharepoint and moodle Works much better
