The memorandum of understanding between Microsoft and the government (which was what facilitated the educational pricing that we've all got used to) expired about 3 years ago. I signed a three year agreement just before it ran out to maximise the benefit. I think the optimum time was about June 2018 as it ran out in about July. We missed out on about 6 months with because out anniversary agreement is in November. It became apparent at the time that the price increase was going to be dramatic. The Microsoft line at the time was that the new pricing structure was intended to encourage migration to cloud products and that if we did that, the costs would be comparable. MS ran conference calls and gave examples where schools would subscribe to O365 and reduce their server estate from "probably around 20" to a single on site server to provide print services. I pointed out that small schools often only ran over it two servers, so the proportional would be massive. 1
Starbug1 Posted December 1, 2020 Author Posted December 1, 2020 Ah yes having spoken to our supplier, I now understand that is exactly what happened to us. We managed to get a 3 year pricing deal just before the price rise 3 years ago.
FragglePete Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 My price increase this year after coming out of a 3 Year fixed priced made me squeal, especial now as we're adding extra features, etc. I remember when they announced EES (at an Edugeek event at Microsoft in Reading), and we ended up paying a third of what we did in previous years, but it has crept up and up over the years and I'm now paying more than I was before EES. I appreciate things go up, and I appreciate Microsoft do give us in Education some stuff for free and a lot of other stuff reduced compared industry but its really starting to take a big chunk out of my budget each year. I wonder has anyone looked at perpetual licensing over OVS/EES? We are a Google School and I'm questioning how many MS Office Licences we actually need, and what the breakdown of costs would be.

We're moving forward with Microsoft 365 A3 for faculty as it works out cheaper thant the classic OVS style -DesktopEducationBundle. M363 A3 for faculty INCLUDES Azure P1 Prem, Intune, Your server CALS which is huge! and a few other neat bits for a better price. Some users will go onto just the free A1 Plus if they're someone who we wouldn't of counted in the 200 hour per annum FTE bit.

"With the exception of Advanced Threat Analytics 2016 and Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, users licensed through Student Use Benefits do not satisfy the License requirement for access to (or management of) the Products in this table" (servers) These would need to be licenced with either FTE based core cal suite, FTE based cals or open cals 2
