Is anyone else administering the BMAT online exams at the start of November? We are going round in circles with the instructions and Cambridge aren't exactly helping clarify things....

 

One minute the school will get the links, the next only candidates will get them sent to their registered email address etc

 

Anyone else made any more progress as to what is actually going to happen?

I've been told by our exams officer that the links will be going to whichever email the candidates registered with and left it at that.

 

I was more concerned with the firewall/web filter side of things and was happy to do a successful test.

I've sent you both a PM with the link we were sent to the test site and what I've unblocked in Smoothwall and firewall.

 

Could you add me to that as well? I need to verify the changes made with SWGfL work for us here. We've only got 1 student doing this so seems like a lot of work!

So there seems to be an "Enable Screen Sharing" extension for Chrome and a Mettl Secure Browser. Not sure which one we should be using.

I'd not seen any reference to the Mettl secure browser when I was doing my tests so I'm happy with using Chrome.

 

The recommendations for the secure browser put me off a bit:

 

Things to remember: To make sure that you do not face any trouble while attempting a test on MSB, please ensure the following:

 

 

  1. There are no restrictions on the network.
     
  2. Anti-Virus is disabled
     
  3. You should have administrator rights on the system and not logged in as a Guest User.
     
  4. Your OS is up to date with no pending installations.

I've just been through all this...

Had a link to test things last week, installed the browser extension, but it then fell over as the prompt to 'share the microphone and camera' that should appear in the address bar, didn't...! the test launched in a new window that didn't have the icons on the right hand side of the address bar... we are using Edge.

Tested again on monday morning and got the 'you need to install the Mettl Secure browser' prompt. Which i did and the test fell over on the same point... after long conversations between myself, the exams officer and the Cambridge support people... the secure browser is not needed, only the extension...! despite the web site saying no additional software needed...

have now managed to GPO the extension to the broswer to our laptops and all now seems to work on the test... we're getting the share the microphone and camera prompt...

Does seem an awful lot of faff for the 4 students we've got taking it... ;)

I'd also like the workstation test link info if possible please.

 

We're running these and the info from Cambridge is lacking (if I'm being polite) and their "go look on the vendor KB" doesn't fill me with any confidence once I've looked at said KB.

It's a bit of a mess isn't it. As of this morning we still haven't been told about the MSB so we are assuming Chrome Plug-in is the way forwards.

 

Saying that,the test choked on my pc as I have two screens, won't proceed until I turn one of them off....

 

We have 7 students taking it so as you say, a lot of faff for not a lot when usually it's just a paper based exam.

In my firewall I've allowed outbound traffic to

on ports

TCP 1987

TCP 1988

TCP 3478

UDP 3478

UDP 49152 - 65535

When testing it doesn't work if you have a second screen attached. As the test is checking for webcam you need one connected.

I'll also note that my "test" link is different to the one above, so I'm not sure if they can track who is clicking what.

I'm thinking it might just be easier to set up a few laptops with admin privileges for these sessions rather than struggle on trying to get it working with restricted accounts.

 

I can bypass the smoothwall then too :)

To save me time looking, can you share how you got the right prompt to allow camera/mic

@mdrabble @kennysarmy are you using Chrome GPO's?

 

User Config > Admin Templates > Google > Chrome > Allow or deny audio/screen/video capture.

 

If you have those set up, that could be why you're not getting a prompt.

 

Yes and could be.

 

Can't spend anymore time on it.

 

We've only got 3 students doing it for two sessions so just going to use some laptops with offline admin accounts - they will be supervised under exam conditions and I can set the offline account to bypass the smoothwall.

I got it working on a laptop that is not joined to the domain in any way, just a bog standard install with the user being an admin. I think this is the way to do it. Too much time wasted on trying to get it working on our standard desktops in the school - we've only got one student doing it.

Just quickly setup three laptops from our library batch - offline account. Bypass smoothwall. Boom. Done.

Good luck everyone, just setup a lab for 6 candidates for the morning, all we need now is for the live links to come through to the candidates and they can access the email they are sent to.

 

I must say, the CAAT helpdesk emails this afternoon make bleak reading, lots of concerned exams officers out there...
