Multimedia Authoring Apps

What are people using for multimedia authoring apps on windows for y7+?

 

Been looking at mediator but open to suggestions

If you're refering to Media Studies (or a similar) subject, then I think it depends on what your teacher can teach i.e.

 

We used Adobe Premier LE last (sch) year, but the teacher changed this year, and didn't properly monitor what the pupils were using and they ended up using Windows Movie Maker which is fine I guess, but I had great fun with trying to make a finished product into a DVD lol

 

(could be due to the crappy sony software on the viao PC we have as a Media Studies pc and the machine came with adobe premier LE which was a step of a reason towards getting that system XP home tho lol so just attached to the network for I'net but no connected domain naturally)

The advantage of Movie Maker is that it teaches the basics and it is free (assuming you use XP).

 

For other multimedia authoring, have you considered Flash? This will allow you to do animation as well as richer content-based publications. You can even embed video - plus Studio MX is dirt cheap for schools (esp since it can be bought with ELCs).

I use both movie maker and flash but i was after something for like authorware but obviously not as complex nor explensive!

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead.

 

We are looking at purchasing Mediator 9 - its £995 for a site licence. Does anybody else use this in school and as it worth the money or are they cheaper alternatives around that people prefer?

I've used Multimedia Fusion from Clickteam quite successfully in a language learning context and it's about the same price for a site licence (£999) as Mediator. Tried Authorware but found it quite confusing. MMF has a good collection of in-built objects and quite a few contributed ones from community members. It comes from a game programming background but that's no bad thing as it performs quite well.

Mediator seemed really pathetic to me. No more than could be easily achieved with basic web editing... and could be vastly improved on if you knew what you were doing. A lot of money for an idiot interface for a too simple task - was my summation.

 

My school were going to buy one licence, and then get the kids to use the trial version, as it allowed endless use with the teacher having the full version to open the creations. Don't know if that worked - sounds very dodgy to me, and I certainly wouldn't condone such activity (should it contravene the EULA) .
