New Host or More RAM?

What are the specs of the host? If RAM is the bottleneck I'd just upgrade that as it would come out cheaper. If its a mix of CPU and RAM then maybe a new host could help.

RAM is normally more in demand on HyperVisors.

 

That does seem to be an awful lot of VMs though for one host. What sort of VMs are you running and what are the specs of the host?

Everything from Domain Controllers to Finance and Mis Systems and our remote desktop environment and various over Vm's

 

Specs are 128gb Ram and dual xeon 4114's

Yeah it is , we was looking at getting a smaller sized host to run our less critical vm's

Is ram running out? Is cpu at 100% ever? Are disk IO queues often over 1?

we are running out of Ram, we are using 115 out of 128 at the moment, but cpu and storage work just fine

Looking at your CPU the max amount of RAM you can have is 768GB so you could upgrade it. Personally I'd get a second host if you have everything on 1 host. That way you can have 2 DCs on 2 separate hosts so if 1 goes down users can still login.

It sounds to me like you have the right amount of RAM for the number of vms on that host. If you are wanting more VMs get another host. The the further you get from 1:1 ratio of vcpu to physical cores, the more odd little problems you will have.

Better to have a second host just for reliability, ability to take one down for maintenance etc. But both should have enough ram to run all the VMs

Whilst Virtualization has removed the need for Physical hardware you should consider an extra host as others have said.

 

Splitting the Domain Controllers would be the first target and would give you some redundancy and room to manoeuvre for updates (and failed updates) etc. if both are running DNS and DHCP. Make sure both DCs are Global Catalogs which I think they are by default anyway.
