Inappropriate ads on YouTube

Apparently one of the teachers here decided to show the Top 40 on YT to a class (I know...) and an ad played for a Cardi B caterwauling which included the loud use of the "motherf..." derogative.

 

Why is this sort of stuff be coming up on unskippable ads anyway and is there a way to report it? More to the point, beyond resetting YT to Restricted Mode again, is there a technical way to avoid a recurrence?

Probably, but surely that sort of stuff shouldn't be coming up? I would imagine a lot of nippers will be searching for Cardi B.

YouTube Restricted Mode should filter out all targeted and non-appropriate advertising. It's basically YouTube Kids on the main YT interface.

Did they flag the ad?

We've just removed Restricted Mode as it seemed to block most of YT. Flag the ad? This is the person who had to be shown how to copy and paste from a web site!

I'll test that on my machine. I seem to recall I still get the odd ad at home, where it's already deployed.

Yes, that's kinda the point of it.

Staff signed in with a G Suite account and approved as a classroom teacher can access YouTube unfettered, and unblock videos on your student G Suite accounts as appropriate though.

The problem in this case was that it was the class teacher! No YT for kids here.

Check that they're in the classroom_teachers group. If you have it set that pending classroom teachers can create classes, that can be an issue.

We don't have GSuite set up that fully: Just eMail and Drive, really. I did try and push for a bit more for lockdown, but it was rejected . (The restricted mode was set at LA level).

 

Unless I was to put teachers in a "restricted" group and get them to ask me to whitelist stuff (which sounds like a lot of work!) I still can't see what's to stop them inadvertently showing unsuitable ads or vids, though.

We've started using 'Safe YouTube' to create safer URLs https://safeyoutube.net/

When I put links etc up for home learning, I pop the Youtube URL in and it generates (hopefully) a link which is free from ads and inappropriateness!

Sorry for jumping in .. but have been quietly following the thread.

This looks great! Thanks for posting it. I looked at a site called ViewPure a few years ago which did a similar thing, but there were some replies on here that it was categorised as a Mature site for some reason, so I veered away from it. This looks just the ticket though :-)
