Morning all,

 

We are looking into securing the main points of entry into our centres, and to have a better way of logging who is in the building in these weird times.

 

We are looking at Paxton with contactless readers, but some bright spark piped up and asked what happens if half a dozen students are at the door, are we really going to make them all wait to scan and enter, scan and enter, or can we have multiple readers at the door, and make it mandatory to pass their card over one and receive a beep or green light irrespective of the door lock status? Does that makes sense? Is it an issue others have come across?

I raised a very very similar question with staff double-swiping when we've had ours installed..... I'm still waiting for an answer.

 

Especially if it's logging door access etc damm well I'm not letting someone in using my card.

 

That's bad security otherwise.

Unless you have something like a turnstile then you can't really get around tail gating and people just holding the door open unless you have a member of staff there.

 

We have a turnstile and the buggers can still squeeze through with their friend!

We are quite happy about people swiping singly, as it will be made disciplinary not to swipe in and out, its more the bottleneck we are trying to tackle. During the day, it will be fine, but at 8:30/9 and 4:30, with students all lined up and trying to get in/out, we want to make it easier. We aren't even worried about the access door at those times, it is more knowing who is in and who is not. Single file through a gate may give us a very long queue 2 mins before lectures start!! I may have to call a paxton consultant(that made me shudder)

The only way you're going to improve throughput is with moor doors/readers.

 

That's basically what I am asking, can you have multiple readers on a door, and will they all still register access, even if the door has been opened by another reader, or we have turned off the door lock for student entry. Although thinking about it, if we disable the door, lining up and swipe, swipe, swipe in one and a time shouldn't take too long, but would probably mean manned door at those times to ensure compliance and security. I think one of the other tick boxes for this project may be removing the need for a receptionist to man the door at all open times...but that hasn't been confirmed

OK, so let's break it down - are you using the actual door opening readers as the way of checking they're in, or do you have a separate reader they swipe which uses the Timesheet tool to register them?

 

You can have as many readers as you like for the latter, as they are dedicated to the task. For the prior, I think there's a physical limitation of the number of readers you can have per controller.

Interesting, we weren't looking at Timesheet at all, we were looking at Roll Call/Muster, that might be an option, will have to look into timesheet as it does use dedicated clock-in/clock-out readers, maybe the 2 parts of Net2 talk to each other...

If you are needing anything like 100% accuracy your only real recourse is a turnstile entrance

Same as when I questioned about queues in the reception area causing problems, I was told "we don't have queues in reception so that's not a problem".

 

What do we get in reception in the mornings.... Queues of staff waiting to login behind visitors who have their photo taken with Inventry. So for accuracy of timekeeping etc it's bit unfair to judge staff on that.

 

But what do we know eh?

You need a system like they have in shops when the person nicks the stock the alarm goes off, sure you can get something like that that would read multiple RFID tags as they pass through, libraries do it with books you chuck them all on and it reads and assigns them to you, you just need a door version of this. There fore students just walk through as normal but it gets them.

That doesn't resolve the problem of one student letting in 10 others through - the 10 others are not recorded as they dont have the RFID

 

It also doesn't easily answer whether someone is coming, going or just loitering in the area

I’ve seen a couple of places use large readers on their fire exits (combined with turnstiles on the entrances), so they’d know who was still in the building in the event of a fire. Apparently they’re not 100% accurate though, so you wouldn’t be able to guarantee who was or wasn’t in the building.

 

A couple of readers might be the simplest solution, but would probably need a member of staff to supervise it and make sure everybody was touching in.

The Paxton systems I’ve seen aren’t much slower than Oyster readers or the readers on buses, so a couple of readers shouldn’t cause massive queues. They will also register a card touch event whilst the attached door is unlocked/open.
