Disease Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 We installed 12 TV's but the staff and Head didn't like them for size so we are no longer purchase them, we had a number of Casio projectors but have now moved to laser short throws for our new block. The TV's offer nothing that an 87" smartboard and laser projector doesn't offer at a fraction of the cost.
localzuk Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 I'm not sure how flat screens work in regards to size, until there are cheap 120" LCD displays I can't see me putting them in classrooms anytime soon. I like the idea of Jamboards etc. but the expense is far too prohibitive. Don't get me wrong I can't wait to ditch projectors but they are cheap (almost a consumable). 120" screens!? We don't even have that in some of our school halls, let alone in classrooms. Most of our rooms had the old smaller sized SMART boards. The largest we ever had in a classroom was 77". We've been putting in 65" touchscreens as standard now, and we've had absolutely no complaints. The image is clearer on a touchscreen than via a projector, so whilst you lose a bit of size, you gain fidelity. 1

In most schools I have introduced LCD screens as opposed to projectors there is an initial pushback around the size of the display. But after a while it becomes clear (excuse the pun) that with the better resolution, crisper picture and much less interference by lights/sun that you just dont need the larger screens. It really is a case of initial perceptions, and getting over that "Oh no the size is so much smaller!" moment with staff The odd exceptions occurs in Science labs as they tend to be bigger
caffrey Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 (edited) Yep my bad, no idea where I got 120" from (Probably from my old setup at home)! Probably would be looking at 65-75" Just had a quick look round, there's some serious heft to the touchscreens - worth considering if your walls are made of cheese Edited July 6, 2020 by caffrey

localzuk Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 Just had a quick look round, there's some serious heft to the touchscreens - worth considering if your walls are made of cheese Indeed, this is an issue in some of our rooms. For those with bad walls, we've used a mix of wall/floor mounts and pure floor mounts (the prior uses both the wall and the floor, the latter just the floor). Loxit make some great mounts for this sort of thing. You'd be surprised what a wall can safely hold.
localzuk Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 Tell that to the kid at the back of the classroom who can't read the text on the screen, fidelity is worthless if you can't read it from the back of the class. Considering they are installed tens of thousands of classrooms in the UK, including about 40 of ours so far, I'd say that either your classes are truly palatial in size, or your fear is slightly misplaced.
Zammo Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 Tell that to the kid at the back of the classroom who can't read the text on the screen, fidelity is worthless if you can't read it from the back of the class. I can honestly say that has never been a problem in the dozens of schools I have installed in. In fact the opposite, I have conversations with teachers who have to move their students around to see a projected image for the reasons already mentioned in this thread.

It's not a fear, its feedback from both staff and pupils, we have a habit of listening to that.
localzuk Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 Just to put it this way. One of our First Schools has an 85" touchscreen in it (we got it ex-demo, so it was a steal). Everyone can see it fine, even from 15m away at the back of the hall. The school love it.
localzuk Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 It's not a fear, its feedback from both staff and pupils, we have a habit of listening to that. Are you not mounting them high enough up then? We have ours on electric mounts so they can be raised/lowered according to need. We've literally never had such a complaint. We've only had people say they're so much better than what they replaced. Maybe that's the issue - the kit we replaced with them was 12+ years old, so they are a huge improvement regardless?
sonofsanta Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 We put 65" screens in. I was concerned about the loss of size at first, but here's the thing: the width of a 16:9 65" touchscreen and a 4:3 77" Smartboard is damn near the same. The size you lose is in the vertical dimension, but practically speaking you lose the bottom of the board that can't be seen over other students' heads anyway. The actual usable space is pretty much the same, but the text is much crisper, the contrast is greater, and you don't need to turn off the lights. An 80" would be better, sure, but they cost twice as much as a 65", and given money is finite, I'd rather make a difference for the biggest quantity of students I can.
altecsole Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 Hi All, Its True Casio pulling out of Projection already started in Europe. With the advent of laser options and Screen becoming more prevalent the market is reducing fast. BenQ has small laser options that may be an option if your looking for low cost of ownership. http://https://business-display.benq.eu/en-uk/findproduct/projector/interactive-classroom-projectors.html The link doesn't seem to be working?

localzuk Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 75 inch = pointless So, yeah, palatial classrooms... None of our classrooms are anywhere near that big in 6 schools. Our biggest would be about as big as from the end wall to the filing cabinet.
Protec Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 (edited) The 4k Promethean ActivePanels at the last school just ran at 1024 x 768 anyway since that's what the native resolution of the monitor was. Also the ActivePanels have so much glare! You can see the light fittings reflected in them. Edited July 6, 2020 by Protec

Also the ActivePanels have so much glare! You can see the light fittings reflected in them. WOW! And I'm worried about the full HD screens and having to use 1024 x 768. Glad it's not just me then. We're limited by the technology of our time - no point having full HD TFTs on a 1024 x 768 projector and a 4:3 smartboard.
Ditto Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 75 inch = pointless You need to speak to your H&S rep. With all that electrical equipment in there, the fire door should be shut 2
Ditto Posted July 6, 2020 Posted July 6, 2020 On topic now, the school where I'm a governor installed 65" touch screens in all classrooms. It's primary and none of the classrooms is large. They replaced traditional IWBs and some laser based projectors. With training, the teachers have brought more interactive learning in to the classroom. All staff commented positively on the brightness and clarity of the display. On the cost side, it was concluded that it works out at about £200 per year per classroom over the life time of the product which was felt to be good value for money. I do agree however where you need a screen bigger than 65", costs do grow considerably. It also helped enormously that a large chunk of the cost came view the 'Friends' of School'.

jthompson Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 75 inch = pointless Jealously looking at how trim and tidy that classroom it. I can only assume that the piles of paper, snapped pencils, shattered biros, dust and long-discarded school jumpers are all just out of shot. 1

Disease Posted July 7, 2020 Posted July 7, 2020 Didn't fancy mounting it more in the middle on the long wall then? We tried that first but the teacher complained that it was to far away from their desk and being unable to use the touch facility over the heads of kids
