Edu24 - Anyone familiar with them?

We are due to renew our 1Gbps fibre connection after five years with Virgin paying £18,000 per year.

 

I expect prices has come down a bit, but I've had a letter from a company called Edu24 suggesting they can do a 1Gbps connection for £8388 per year with no install costs.

 

So I just wanted to know is £8388 per year a reasonable cost for a 1Gbps connection at the current time, or is it way to cheap? I should point out that this is not a proper quote, just a letter with prices 'subject to survey'.

 

Has anyone used Edu24 before and can provide any feedback on them?

They may be great, but approach with caution

Southern communications offered me 1000/1000 fiber for £8000/year, so it's a normal price

I'd say that's now a bit high. We're under £7k for a full 1Gbit to most locations with no install costs whether you take our filtering or not.

We use Charterhouse to provide our WAN and internet connectivity, https://www.cvdgroup.com/. They can use OpenReach or Virgin to provide connectivity.

I’ve not got a quote for a internet circuit from them in a while but the last time I asked for a 1gbit p2p circuit, they quoted ~£2k for installation and about £250/m for rental.

I think the cheapest Gb (on ethernet fibre) we've done is around 4.7k, but that very much depends on where you are. 6-7k is around average I would say. If you'd like a quote, I'd be happy to send one over, PM me if you'd like one.

 

ref the 'subject to survey' , all telecoms quotes include that, just in case there are any unexpected issues, but the annual charge should be accurate. It's the set up costs that can change if there is more infrastructure build required than expected.

Thanks everyone. Amazing the prices have dropped so massively in the last few years. I’ve got other quotes coming in so I’ll wait and see what they come up with.

I also had a generic leaflet through from them a few weeks back and have today had a more detailed letter saying they have completed some network expansion work in the area and can offer us a 1Gbps line for £7,450pa through an Openreach fibre circuit.

We are actually looking at our ISP options this year as our current contract is up in December.

 

I actually came on EduGeek to search for Edu24 and this was the only article that came up. I was also curious to see if others had heard of these or even used them. New startup then I'm guessing?

Edu24 seems like a new startup (domain is less than a year old) but there are few things I'm uncomfortable with personally.

 

1. No office adress on their website

2. Telephone number to contact their Education specialist is non-geographic on their contact us page (0333) and on their quote request page it's an 0203 number.

3. No company trading name or company number on their website

4. Can't find them on Companies House anywhere, and I've checked virtually every Tom Newman on it.

5. No Tweeting ever. No Twitter followers, and only follow 3 people on Twitter, the Dfe, the EEF, and the Chronicle of Higher Education

6. No policies on their website. At all. Data Processing. Ts&Cs. Nothing.

7. Whois on their website hides any information about them

 

All things that leave me really uncomfortable!

 

I'm all for new startups trying to enter and disrupt the marketplace, but they're not very transparent.

I went through the same checking process (not to the same level though!) and came to the same conclusion. They could well be a great company in the making, but my worry is that if they are aggressively leafleting without getting some of these basics right they have their priorities all wrong.

The fact they have a count of how many schools are on the front page which to me insinuates the amount of schools that use them - which obviously isn't the case - seems very dodgy. Bargepole!

We had a leaflet from this company delivered today. Seems to be the same letter others have received. Ours says £399p/m for 1G. Seems decent enough although I'm yet to see how it compares with others price wise. My concerns are the same shared by others on here already though, particularly @paulkerton so they're not a company we'd consider. I'm not averse to switching from our current provider and giving a smaller company a go but they have to realise there are people out there who do their research into firms and are massively put off when they see the basics aren't in place.
