Home internet speeds

When I test on my phone I'm getting downloads of around 23 Mbps - it's a 2.4 GHz connection to my Virgin Fibre router.

 

My PC has a netgear N150 Wireless USB adapter - I'm sat 18 inches away from the dongle when I test my phone - but when I check on my PC I get speeds of only 3 Mbps.

 

Any ideas why this might be?

What do you get plugged into the router wired? Is this Virgin via coax or via ADSL via BT network?

It's fibre Virgin, I don't have a long enough ethernet cable, the doors are not conveniently placed to the two separate rooms, even though it's effectively just through one wall, and the phone seems to get a good enough signal.

 

Maybe the USB WiFi adapter is just sh*t

USB WLAN adapters often aren't the best, although we use one or two el-cheapo ones at work for non-critical things and they seem to work just fine.

 

Does the adapter have an antenna? Try one that does if not perhaps.

It came with a 2m extension cable and cradle thingy - so it's the best I'm going to get I think.

 

Next time I'm in school I might see if one of the work ones get's me a better connection whilst I'm working from here...

Would a powerline (Ethernet-over-mains) adapter be an option? We use them at home and they work wonderfully.

Is the adaptor USB 2.0 or 3.0? USB 2.0 is singularly useless for any network adaptor IME, due to its half-duplex nature.
