They scheduled it, I was happy where I was but they are apparently decommissioning the servers - not impressed with the hosting going from £50 to £160 pa either!

Krystal won't support the domain for renewals but they'll support it on the hosting side. Krystal use netistrar for domains so one option is you could just move the domain directly to netistrar to cut out the middle man:

Netistrar deal directly with the registries so you won't be dealing with a reseller going down that route.

Host it yourself - we always have done. For a short period they wanted it external but on snow days their system couldnt cope with the demand of everyone checking the website for information, so we went back in house. Never misses a beat on uptime!

Hosting it yourself does have some drawbacks, however.

 

It assumes that you have the expertise, the time and resources to build and maintain whatever stack your website is running on.

 

It’s an extra hole that you have to punch into your firewall to slow the outside world access.

 

Ideally you’d have it on a separate segment of your network should it get compromised, to limit the amount of damage an attacker can do.

 

It assumes that you have a decent internet connection and you’re eating into the bandwidth that your ISP provides. Ideally you’d have some kind of DDOS protection in place as well as having your website hosted on site makes you a bigger target.

 

There was a time when I would have unequivocally agreed with you but these days, with schools and everyone else under constant cyber attack, I’d rather farm the running of a LAMP stack or whatever onto a third party and let them deal with the setting up, maintenance and security implications that come with it. Let’s face it, they’d probably be better equipped for it. It’s the same reason of never run my own Exchange server again, let Microsoft deal with that crap.

Why is this so difficult - WebhostUK now say they cannot support .sch.uk (having initially said they could!), and neither can netristar.

 

Anyone know a registrar (other than TSOHost or SWGfL) that supports .sch.uk domains, otherwise I will have to move the hosting to a new provider and leave the domains with TSOHost.

Do you mean .sch.uk? We have many of them with Krystal.

You mentioned .school before which Netistrar do support, if it's .sch.uk then Krystal do support them but you have to request the transfer (once the tag is changed) via a support request as there's no way to automate those transfers due to the unique nature of that specific domain extension.

The main problem with .school domains is they just don't sell in large quantities so smaller hosts are unlikely to offer them as a result. I can tell you that manually maintaining hundreds of domain extensions and the pricing that can change at any time isn't easy, often you'll typically only find hosts that offer those type of TLD's if they're a domain registrar themselves. I could go on about the finer details about domain pricing but that's a pretty dull topic
