MatthewL Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 Been asked to upgrade a Windows 7 Home Premium HP PC, AMD E2-3200 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 2.40GHz with 4GB ram to Windows 10. It's a dual core processor, suspected around 10 year old PC would you bother or replace? Only come about with Win 7 EOL, its a home user. they did ask the question is it worth it at that point I had not powered on. My thoughts are its gonna run like a dog and probably should look at replacing.
Norphy Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 (edited) If there are drivers for all of its hardware, it possibly might be, assuming you don’t need to pay money for a new license. In my experience, Windows 10 performance is no worse than Windows 7 even on old hardware. However, if the thing is ten years old, it’s worth looking at replacing. Even a £300 piece of junk from Curry’s is going to be an improvement. Plus there is always the option of getting reconditioned kit from from the usual suspects as well. MatthewL Posted February 18, 2020 Author Posted February 18, 2020 I'm looking at just doing a Windows 10 inplace upgrade as its free. Will take an image of it which I suppose I can always restore if needed. I don't dabble in desktop too much these days so wanted an opinions before I did it.
3s-gtech Posted February 18, 2020 Posted February 18, 2020 It’s closer to 8 years old. I have upgraded very similar spec machines from 7 to 10, they worked just fine afterwards. As always, an SSD will be a cheap and worthwhile host for it. 1
Rob_D Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 In my experience, Win10 can chug a bit on only 4gb of RAM. But we've got similar specced PCs (just upgraded to 8gb ram) running Win10 quite happily.
mavhc Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 I've got 2012 laptops with 2GB ram running Win10 on a domain, it's not that bad as long as you have an ssd. Installed Win10 on a core2duo last week to give to someone who broke their new laptop

RMcGuigan Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 Good stuff, I'm sure you've already though of this but disabling all the unnecessary background apps for W10 will drastically improve the performance when hosting on old kit.
