Just sat in an airport waiting for my delayed flight and I have just noticed it is a leap year.

 

Every leap year I have been working in IT some software has failed to function on the 29th of February. One year it was PARS and I think another year was something relating to GroupCall software.

 

Wonder if it will happen again?

Never had any issues on a Leap Year but did make a lot of money one night sat in a comms room as 00:00 came round on 01:01:2000....

 

Nothing memorable happened that night other than the pizza delivery was late

Never had any notable issues on the 29th, but I knew it was a leap year, as calculations provide an integer when the year is dividable by 4 (and as it's not an integer when dividable by 100 I don't need to check it's integer when divisible by 400)... my birthday is near the end of this month so I am always interested anyway.

In my thirty-mumble year career in computing, including several as a programmer, the only leap year “problem” I have encountered was the millennium . That gave me a few years well paid work before being consigned to history as a non-event by muggles who still don’t understand how much work we did to ensure that it was.

Not yet experienced any issues on the 29th and Ive worked in IT for nearly 20 years. Lets hope that doesn't change this year!

Nope never had any 29Feb problems. Had to re-write code pre millenium to avoid issues which paid a nice amount of overtime

Only problem I've had on 29th February was one year when I got a phone call from work just before midnight (i.e. it woke me up and confused the dog - who thought it must be time for a walk)

 

They had got a message up that they had never seen before

it said "Happy Leap Year day"

 

OK - so it was 29th Feb and it was being nice

 

 

Only right that I should have been on call because I had written that program and must have been in a silly mode when I did the date validation and inserted happy new year and happy leap year checks

probably should have put in a Star Wars Day but didn't

 

clearly the leap year checks only triggered every 4 years - and the 1Jan checks normally didn;t trigger as the systems generally didn;t run with 1st Jan as a date (they would run it as the same logical day from about the 29th Dec to 2ndor 3rd Jan for business reasons!)

 

hence - unknown message so ring support rather than think about it

 

this was before viruses became a thing - especially on systems with pretty much no network connections whatsoever (except weird Bull Only stuff running at 9600 bps!) so they wouldn;t have been thinking of that sort of thing

 

ANyway - only problem I have personally had with them

 

as mentioned above though Year 2000 made me a lot of money - but only had one problem - in the March when a power failure restarted a DOS system and the hardware turned out to be non-compliant - complex fix - restart it and enter the date

lack of problems was due to me spending about 4 years working on making sure there were no problems

Fact.... Olympic Games only happen in a leap year.

We work for free in a Leap year...we don’t get paid extra for working on 29th Feb (unless you are paid per day)

or - alternatively - we get paid extra for 3 years in spite of not working for one of the days we get paid for

Only on a leap year do we work for all the days we are paid for

kinda like having a day off which you sleep right through and don't notice

I've met a few - they just celebrated their birthday on 1st March

 

then, when they got older - they claimed their age was the number of genuine 29th Feb they had seen

Had one person apply for a job who did this (in the days when an application form asked for an age) and he claimed to be $veryyoungage but included an extra letter explaining

When I interviewed him he said it was a wonderful tactic - he got far more interviews and it guaranteed a predictable start to the interview that he was used to dealing with

The person I worked with celebrated on the 28th Feb. Her logic was she was born in the month of February not March.
