Video Messaging for young step son’s phone

My step son has a android phone we want to put some sort of messaging and video call app on, but he's only 10 and he's too young for WhatsApp and his dad's totally against it. Is there a child friendly WhatsApp alternative out there?

If it's an Android device does it have Google Hangouts on? It's a free service that you can log in to and manage from a computer if you set up the account.

Yeah, although its a bit up in the air from what I last saw its going.

I think it's just for home use its being shut down.

 

Google Duo would work and Skype.
