Currently pupils are only using chromebooks so I would like to change google chrome’s search engine. Thank you
aicrd Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 Could you not just use Google with safesearch turned on? If it's chromebooks you can force safesearch via the Google Admin Console.

"The children will be using Google outside of school, so lets teach them how to use Google safely." We do however enforce safesearch of Google and Youtube. TechMonkey Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 What are you not finding safe about it? As others have said, make sure safesearch is enforced at your filter. If pupils are getting through to bad content then maybe that is the fault of the content filter rather than Google? There is a shift towards making pupils digitally resilient, which is what mrwoberts mentioned, and is more about pupils learning how to deal with the Internet rather than just trying to lock all the bad stuff away. The theory goes that if we don't teach them how to manage it then it will be more of an issue when they have to deal with it.

I understand that kids should be taught how to use google safely but that is out of my hands. I will look into safe.duckduckgo.com thanks for that! I also read good and bad about kiddle but we might give that a go. We have LGFL web filtering in place. They offered to turn on the severe restricted network but I yet to read about that and I think that would be over the top. Thank you anyway!

Does anyone know how to change the search engine in the google admin console for a user? I found the safe search and a whole lot of other settings but nothing on the search engine. I can change it at the Chromebook end but the kids can just change it back!

Should not be overridden unless there is a missed setting that allows users to configure. Depending on the filter, we have lightspeed, there is sometimes a safe search enforcement there. If they are on PCs as well there is a template for Chrome settings in GPO that can enforce it there as well. I would just try one method that works for your environment.

localzuk Posted December 13, 2019 Posted December 13, 2019 I'm a little confused by this thread - no-one has noticed this is in Windows. Do all your children log in to Chrome on your PCs? If not, then settings in the admin console will do nothing. If it is Chromebooks, I don't think you can force change the search engine centrally. But again, this should really be handled by your filtering. Safe search should be set by your web filter. I have yet to find a web filter that doesn't do this! Both our filtering solutions handle this - Sophos XG (for non-Chromebooks) has a tickbox, and Securly (for our Chromebooks) has a tickbox. We've not had any complaints about Google results for years.
