Citrix education licensing/pricing

Morning all,

 

Anyone got a bead on roughly what prices we can expect to pay for a citrix virtual app and desktop licence in an education setting, if they indeed do that. Currently "no discount, off the site" pricing is around £162 per, which is eyewatering when we want 150-200!!

 

Do Citrix have a educational licence program or are they still pulling the minimum spend malarkey that rules out anyone other than a Uni?

Why Citrix?

Vmware Horizon Advanced licensing will give you the ability to run full desktops and applications.

It can be licensed based on concurrent users also which could potentially save money depending upon its use case.

 

Been a long time user of Horizon and it’s great.

I've used both and personally prefer Citrix but honestly it isn't worth the ludicrous rate they charge. We only use Citrix because we got it for free as a Citrix Partner.

 

AFAIK citrix don't do any sort of Education pricing but I may be wrong as I tend to do more Corporate Citrix Installs.

We are already a VMWare Horizon standard user, but we cannot get it stable, so I have been asked for competing pricing, is all. Don't really want to pay Citrix prices anyway! We have so many little problems that IT can live with, but the general user can't. Printers dropping, black screens, slowness, etc, long login times, etc. And it's not everyone at same time, its the odd user here and there, really annoying! Running Persona and have Tesla cards and APEX PCOIP offload cards too. 512GB RAM in beefy server and plenty of space connected into a 10Gbe backbone gigabit network. It should p all over this scenario.

Something isn't right somewhere then. We have 2 hosts with plenty of CPU and RAM, one of the hosts has an NVidia K1 card in which we share amongst some desktops. We have zero issues, none of what you are explaining above.

Have you tried removing some of the complexity, i.e. APEX PCOIP offload card? We looked at these and decided for the very little difference they make we couldn't justify the cost or complexity. We don't run persona - so maybe this is something else you could remove to see if it helps?

 

Maybe a more appropriate use of spend could be on some consultancy as you already have the licensing and hardware?

Citrix pulled their educational site licence pricing about 12-18 months ago, with a new pricing structure being released around April 2019 until then it was a bit limbo. New pricing was never set in stone though. Our costs for a site licence covering all FTE staff went from around £22k, to the new model of licencing every single user which is around 2000 and the cost jumped to £80K! (eighty thousand) per year!!!!

 

Not renewed at that pricing and stuck with old concurrent perpetual licence model instead for the time being and delayed the full site roll out.

 

Communicated with Citrix directly back and forth throughout the year, and they are again in the process of changing the model because they are losing business in the education sector rapidly (or at least thats what Citrix person is relaying to us).

 

With the old licencing model it was more than worth rolling out site wide (in our case) instead of replacing workstations on a cycle, but with the new licence model it defeats the object and there wasn't really a cost saving so held back for the time being.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly! TBH we use blast a lot more these days than PCOIP. We have 2 M10 Tesla cards in each server. The system works great in some situations, and I am pretty sure its a profile/persona issue, but higher ups want all the options! I used to sell small business citrix years ago, and the markups are horrendous between what the dealer buys it for the RRP to the end user, but Citrix set the pricing. weird really, but I wasn't complaining back in the day, now I'm on the other end, complaining is the name of the game!

Thats sounds like a lot

We pay £3189 for 54 concurrent licenses per year (gateway and xen app) - we have 200 teachers but there are never more than 30 logged on at once.
