Proof that O365 is junk

I've been running my own personal email server from home to manage my emails for the last 16 years. Never had any issues with receiving SPAM crud to my email address claiming account been hacked etc.

I moved to office 365 about 6 months ago and i'm getting emails claiming 'your account has been hacked', Important - i have recorded you' etc. if you want me to delete these files then pay me in litecoin.

Just goes to show how unsafe 365 is, and seems that most companies getting hit with viruses are on 365 also.

Glad we're still on exchange locally.

Sorry but No. Your home server is not more secure or better value for money than Office 365.

You wouldnt happened to have entered your domain as a whitelist address anywhere in the spam filtering?

Just that I have seen those types of messages get through because people have added their domain to the whitelist rules which basically bypasses spam filtering. The message headers can tell you, if you spam score is -1 then its bipassing it.

The header could read:

X-MS-Exchange-Organization-SCL: -1

zero spam like the above to inbox. Office 365 is setup with the defaults, whitelisting nothing.

We're on O365 and we get very little spam

My last place we used Gmail. My new job uses Office 365. I have to admit the spam filter on Office 365 is shocking compared to Gmail.

I moved my mail from 1&1 to O365 and I have next to no spam compared to the hundreds I used to receive daily, lucky if I get 1 or 2 a week now.

You can alter it’s sensitivity to compensate, we had a couple of users getting inundated and we made it stricter and it did help, also if your email is one somewhere like haveibeenpwned you can expect it a bit more

We use Office 365 with no third-party filter in front, and get very little spam. Phishing we filter using custom rules (as everybody should in my opinion) - go see the Phishing Emails thread in the Security forum.

We don't tend to get a huge amount of spam but our staff like to complain about too many parent emails getting caught in the junk folder, checking the junk folder regularly is apparently beyond most people.

Sorry, you have an odd interpretation of email safety and what junk/spam is, plus a highly probable misunderstanding of correlation/causation.

Even if the spam filtering on O365 was junk, I'd say it's still a good option to stick with MS or Google in terms of security. Yes, it's possible to run your own email server and be nearly as secure as the big beasts, but you'd really have to know what you're doing to match them on that front.

 

The phishing thread on here includes tonnes of examples where O365 admins have needed to set up filters etc but which hasn't needed anything from me as a Gmail admin. That's totally anecdotal of course, and different schools' addresses will be exposed to different extents, but the impression from here is that Google are on top of spam filtering a bit more than MS.

 

The other impression I get from the phishing thread is that phishing campaigns target O365 users more than they do Google users. I'm guessing that's largely down to nothing more that the comparative numbers of users, however, rather than one being inherently 'less safe' than the other.
