Recommend me a desktop replacement laptop

Hi Everyone,

 

Anyone know of any good deals on a laptop to suit the following requirements ?

 

My role within the trust that I work in has changed and I am far more mobile than I used to be and it is also time to replace the aging IT Staff desktops. With this in mind I am seriously considering a laptop rather than a desktop. Currently my my average working day will require the regular use of 2 Virtual machines and more often than not some sort of video capture and rendering. Along side this there is the usual RDP, VNC, Word Excel and Browsing. With this in mind I am looking for some thing that has 16GB ram although ideally more and about 1TB of total storage. I am happy with 14" or 15.6". I would also like to be able to hook it up to 2x external monitors potentially. finally a Good keyboard and Track pad are a must !

These are nice machines but you may struggle with the onboard graphics if video editing.

If you are doing video editing, then you need to be considering the Dell precision mobiles. Downside is (not sure about the latest model) it requires a dongle for network cables. plus side, should have more than enough grunt if you go for the i7 or i9.

From memory, I think the new XPS 15 has an nvidia graphics card in (not sure which one) which will make things a bit better.

If you are going HP, I'm a bit disappointed with the robustness of the new HP Probooks, there seems to be an alarming amount of flex in them, so I'm expecting the ones deployed this year coming back at some point in a not particularly good condition. Not tried the new elitebooks, but they are normally pretty good.

What ever model you get, make sure it will work with a USB C Dock, because that makes things a lot easier!

How mobile is mobile? How often will you be lugging this laptop from one building to another?

 

In my opinion, the days of the oversized "Desktop Replacement" laptop are well and truly over. CPUs and RAM in laptops perform at much the same level as their desktop equivalents and storage is as fast, if not faster with SSDs. That said, "workstation" class laptops are worth a look because they generally are able to take more RAM and can sometimes get more storage in them too. I also think that the amount of expansion ports on laptops isn't as important as it was as USB C/Thunderbolt C docking stations are becoming more commonplace and better quality and they can charge your laptop and provide all of the external connectivity through a single cable.

 

I work in a MAT, the majority of our staff have a Dell Latitude 7390 laptop. They have quad core CPUs, 8GB of RAM (can be expanded, they use standard SO-DIMMs), PCIe SSDs and a 1080p 13" screen. Most of our desks have Thunderbolt docking stations with wired network connections and two monitors attached so someone can rock up to any desk and work with their own machine.

 

I personally have a Dell Precision laptop, a 5530. I chose this one as it can take two storage devices (a SATA drive and a PCIe SSD) and it has a 15" screen which I prefer as I can use it at 1080p without having to use display scaling. Yes, it doesn't have an internal NIC but that doesn't matter as it spends most of its time attached to a docking station. It's based on the same chassis as the Dell XPS 15; my particular model doesn't have an external GPU (you need the Xeon model for that) but I don't need it. The RAM also can be expanded, unlike the XPS. The only thing I don't like about it is that its chassis is a bugger for attracting greasy fingerprints.

Although we maybe would be able to design a system that theoretically would work with a vanilla Hackintosh Install, unfortunately this is not something we could support neither condone. I can however supply you with new and used Macs if required.
