JJonas Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 Saw this and thought of Bladerunner, scary and fascinating at the same time. https://news.sky.com/story/man-arrested-in-japan-over-stalking-pop-star-he-found-by-studying-reflections-of-her-pupils-in-photos-she-shared-on-social-media-11832870 Mods: Please move this if you can think of a better place for it.
Oaktech Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 Not difficult... There is a blogger local to me who posts a lot of things on social media: including her house renovations, a picture in the corridor of her office, a view from her kids sailing club, a selfie in her favourite coffee shop, because I'm local I can casually recognise from those photos *exactly* where she lives, works and places she frequents. I'm not a weirdo and I'm not going to do anything with that information, but someone else might, and google streetview would let someone who wasn't local do it.
mikeprice Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 many years ago I had to have a word with the father of one of my daughter's friends she was happily posting videos on YouTube - just silly childish stories with puppets she had made out of household rubbish she was about 7 or 8 at the time problem was that you could see her in her school jumper - and read the name of the school and she had a 'stage' set up by the window - so you could see out of it - towards the stream and bridge so basically with a bit of effort and Google Maps you could identify her exact house and bedroom her father was horrified - and grateful - and he was a police officer so he thought he was on top of all that stuff but he hadn't put 2 and 2 together I heard the next Monday that she and her Dad had spent the weekend building a new bigger stage for her puppets complete with a full background sheet and she had been gently told about videos with school jumpers in them she mobilise her friends to remake all the stories with new improved puppets - because the originals had all had to be taken down

sonofsanta Posted October 14, 2019 Posted October 14, 2019 High resolution cameras are a nightmare for privacy in all sorts of unexpected and scary ways. Remember this? https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/dec/30/hacker-fakes-german-ministers-fingerprints-using-photos-of-her-hands [ETA: just seen it's referenced at the end of the OP's article. That's what I get for overeager posting!]

A celebrity lives near me and posts similar stuff. I know roughly where they live and their routine. So i'd agree its not difficult. even if you're not local!
