Just pushed Windows 10 out over the summer and also pushing to use one drive and SharePoint for staff.

I'm getting PC's showing 'no internet connection' bottom right of the screen even though they are logged on to the Domain and also have access to general sites like Google and BBC (not cached) but fail to connect to our SharePoint site in office365 or other office365 services. Sometimes a reboot fixes it or removing the patch lead and resetting it or releasing the IP and renewing.

Anyone come across this before and if so did you get a fix.

My initial thought is that staff are leaving their PC's logged on and they are going to sleep overnight.

Very common if you have a PROXY. There's even a group policy to turn it off.

Computer Configuration>Policies>Administrative Templates>Network>Network Connections>Do not show the "local access only" network icon

  • Thanks 1

Not using a proxy.

Ignore that stupid yellow exclamation mark and just make sure users have assess to shared drives, internet and email etc. It is just a service that runs in the background and tries to establish connectivity with certain external servers.

I think you can specify in GP what URL it uses as the basis for that test. We don't use OneDrive here so I don't know if first needs that checker to be 'okay' before attempting a connection or not.

So why would it be intermittent surely it either blocks or doesn't and why does a reboot of the PC fix it?

What if the client clears cache or tries a private browser tab instead of rebooting?

Yeah similar to one router I had once. There was an inbuilt tester in the settings, which upon investigation one of the tests it did was a DNS lookup on a domain which apparently didn't exist. So of course, the test always failed 100% of the time.

If the connection test files then you have problems with office e.g. can't embed video in powerpoint as it thinks it is offline can't connect to SharePoint from word

I see this with a batch of Acer netbooks, and they've usually lost their connectivity to wifi and have a 169.x.x.x address. They appear connected but for whatever reason, the wifi has stopped working properly. Disconnecting and reconnecting often works.

Hello, Name, reboot, still not working? OK I can't solve it, pass to 2nd line team.

That was about how much time you had in one place to actually fix something. God forbid you actually 1) tried and 2) managed to fix it whilst on the phone - you got told off by management for doing that.

I have this problem on some desktops with ethernet but rarely on wireless.

The head had it on his laptop but it mysteriously fixed itself.

The head's secretary has it on her desktop but nothing i've tried will fix it.

I've fixed it a couple of times by disjoining and rejoining the domain but on other computers that doesn't work.
