E_G_R2 Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 (edited) Just pushed Windows 10 out over the summer and also pushing to use one drive and SharePoint for staff. I'm getting PC's showing 'no internet connection' bottom right of the screen even though they are logged on to the Domain and also have access to general sites like Google and BBC (not cached) but fail to connect to our SharePoint site in office365 or other office365 services. Sometimes a reboot fixes it or removing the patch lead and resetting it or releasing the IP and renewing. Anyone come across this before and if so did you get a fix. My initial thought is that staff are leaving their PC's logged on and they are going to sleep overnight. Edited October 10, 2019 by E_G_R2
bald_pig Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 I had similar symptoms that were resolved by disabling IPv6 1
Jawloms Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 Very common if you have a PROXY. There's even a group policy to turn it off. Computer Configuration>Policies>Administrative Templates>Network>Network Connections>Do not show the "local access only" network icon 1

Jawloms Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 Not even a transparent one? No filtering in place?
Davit2005 Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 Ignore that stupid yellow exclamation mark and just make sure users have assess to shared drives, internet and email etc. It is just a service that runs in the background and tries to establish connectivity with certain external servers. 1

I think you can specify in GP what URL it uses as the basis for that test. We don't use OneDrive here so I don't know if first needs that checker to be 'okay' before attempting a connection or not. 1
maark Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 this is the site it tries to connect to http://www.msftconnecttest.com/connecttest.txt - have you whitelisted or added to exceptions on your filtering solution?

Its intermittent and not school wide, users can go for weeks being OK then one day they get the yellow triangle and can't do Office365 stuff. Re boot and they are OK
maark Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 we had it but when i added a firewall rule at top level for that site in sophos xg then it fixed it - deoands on your firewall/filtering

jthompson Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 So why would it be intermittent surely it either blocks or doesn't and why does a reboot of the PC fix it? What if the client clears cache or tries a private browser tab instead of rebooting?
TwistedHelixis Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 Out of interest, did you ever have a proxy?

Yeah similar to one router I had once. There was an inbuilt tester in the settings, which upon investigation one of the tests it did was a DNS lookup on a domain which apparently didn't exist. So of course, the test always failed 100% of the time.
TwistedHelixis Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 Problem is, there are some parts of the OS that will not try to connect if the connection test fails, we had some very odd issues when we had similar.
maark Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 If the connection test files then you have problems with office e.g. can't embed video in powerpoint as it thinks it is offline can't connect to SharePoint from word

I must admit was me having a rant, we get calls who just say there is a yellow exclamation passed to us without any further checks done jus so annoying Edited October 10, 2019 by Davit2005 1
Foresthippy Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 I see this with a batch of Acer netbooks, and they've usually lost their connectivity to wifi and have a 169.x.x.x address. They appear connected but for whatever reason, the wifi has stopped working properly. Disconnecting and reconnecting often works.
DrBeaker Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 I must admit was me having a rant, we get calls who just say there is a yellow exclamation passed to us without any further checks done jus so annoying Hello, Name, reboot, still not working? OK I can't solve it, pass to 2nd line team. That was about how much time you had in one place to actually fix something. God forbid you actually 1) tried and 2) managed to fix it whilst on the phone - you got told off by management for doing that.
browolf Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 I have this problem on some desktops with ethernet but rarely on wireless. The head had it on his laptop but it mysteriously fixed itself. The head's secretary has it on her desktop but nothing i've tried will fix it. I've fixed it a couple of times by disjoining and rejoining the domain but on other computers that doesn't work.
