garethEds Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 Evening All, Tearing my hair out with WOL and Windows 10 (and 7). As I've posted before it has stopped working. I've been testing today with two machines plugged into a 'clean' switch. Both machines on the same VLAN. What I discovered was... If I switch the machines off with shutdown.exe or other shutdown software then the machine will not WOL. If I switch the machine off with the power button held in for 5 seconds then the machine will WOL So - how do we explain it? A Google search gives results showing that I need to turn off FastStartup in Windows 10 with a registry setting. Fine - I can do that. I have done that. I have set the registry to 0 instead of 1. All good? Not a chance - despite seeing it the machines will not boot up when shutdown with software. (but they still work when pressing the power button for 5 seconds to power down). HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power\HiberbootEnabled That is where I am. I was hoping turning off this FastStartup would solve my issue but it's not happening. mikeprice Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 I am not at all clear as to how Windows has any influence on WOL - I always thought it was purely a BIOS thing as the computer isn't running at the time - and also because it can book to any operating system Hence Windows should not affect the WOL function - unless Windows modifies the BIOS in some way - which seems weird and doesn't make any sense in you situation - I assume that you have tried hard shutdown and soft shutdown?? I will be interested to see how you get on

From what I gather it seems when it goes into faststartup it doesn’t shut down properly. It simply hibernates. When I turn it off with the 5second powerbutton press it conpletely shuts it down. When I use a remote shutdown app like Emco it is a soft shutdown. It’s annoying me. G
mikeprice Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 I read somewhere that holding down the shift key while clicking on shutdown does a full shutdown (hard) can also be done by windows+x - u - u but then I think shutdown from command line does the same power button for 5 seconds is yet different - I think it's probably more complicated than I think - haven;t had to look into it for a decade or so!
mikeprice Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 Just found this On some Windows 10/8 systems, the Wake-Up feature doesn't work if the 'Send The Wake-on-LAN Packet To...' option is set to 'Broadcast Address 255.255.255.255'. If you have this problem, you should set this option to 'Broadcast Address According to IP Address'. from the nirsoft web site https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wake_on_lan.html I was wondering if maybe the 'finger of death' shutdown means the NIC doesn;t have an IP address - but the software may tell the NIC what the IP address is before finishing off - so it waits for something specific to the ip address may be rubbish but it is a theory - something is clearly different between the software and 'finger of death'

I will be interested to see how you get on It's to do with the suspend states (C-states I believe) etc and if the network card is on/active, waiting for packets/a signal or if it turns the Ethernet port off when it's asleep. WoL is fantastic - when it works. I use it at home with Android, NFC and an app to wake the PC up.

WoL is fantastic - when it works. I use it at home with Android, NFC and an app to wake the PC up. Yes I believe it is to do with S states in the BIOS but I cannot find it. I've updated the BIOS on our 600G1 machines and the network drivers. Just need Windows to do a full shutdown instead of a fast one.

chazzy2501 Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 Windows and its drivers CAN affect WOL, have you checked that WOL is still enabled in the drivers Oh, and if you have a ubiquity Unifi switch they don't pass WOL traffic. 1

Ours all get hybrid states etc turned off, hibernation disabled turned off etc. We do use RM CC4 here, but we've got WoL working on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 builds 1709 - 1809.
garethEds Posted October 2, 2019 Author Posted October 2, 2019 Based on the information here and what I've read on the web 'Wake on LAN' isn't supported in Windows 10 any more. That is the official Microsoft line. Brilliant. So what I have done is...… created two task schedules that get sent out to the machines via GPO. One wakes the PC up at 7:30 from a state of sleep whilst the other runs at 4:30pm - shutting down any machines that are not being used (are idle). If they are not idle the task does not run. The task will try again in 30 mins. I am testing that this evening as I will still be here at 4:30pm. I'll change the time eventually as we often have open evenings. Fingers crossed it works. Gareth
Boredguy Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 This is why we just get our staff to turn the computers on in their room when they get in each morning. Only takes 30 seconds or so for the PC to get to the logon screen with Windows 10 and a SSD. Having a scheduled task to wake them up means having to remember to update it during the holidays.

chazzy2501 Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 (edited) I forgot to mention, WOL broke ages ago for me but I have HP 800 G1s I use the BIOS wakeup feature weekdays a 8:00 (to pickup updates and wot not) clone BIOS is easy on hp. EDIT: you can disable fast start in the BIOS as well. Also for testing you can disable fast start by holding shift when you press shutdown. (you can check your PCs "Up time" in the task manager to check.) Edited October 2, 2019 by chazzy2501

I use it at home with Android, NFC and an app to wake the PC up.Until very recently, I used a tablet and MediaMonkey Remote to WOL and play music from the PC. Now, I can wake the PC, but MM doesn't output sound until I log back in on the PC. Works thereafter, until it sleeps again. That is the official Microsoft line. Brilliant. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits!
ass17 Posted October 6, 2019 Posted October 6, 2019 We had exactly the same issue as you with our HP PCs, I was going round in circles, shutdown -> WOL, didn’t work, shutdown -> Turn mains Switch off then on and WOL works. It’s turns out the the issue was related to having the Secure Boot OFF and hard drive in MBR mode was causing the issue. We fixed it by converting the disk in windows to GPT then turn Secure Boot back ON. Problem solved. 1
