Jawloms Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 We'd like a Minecraft club here, but just a standard Minecraft not the education edition. We just want a club where kids who already have their own Minecraft account come in after school, play about and then go home. Anyone else do this? I wouldn't have them accessing external servers. Do you host your own server or make them play standalone and then "Open to LAN" if they choose? If you host, do you use one which can hold more than one world? Can you restrict it somehow so you don't get some annoying kid sticking dynamite everywhere cos it's funny? Is there a reason not to have such a club? Thanks Stuart
tapb Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 Some great questions! Any reason you're steering away from the Education Edition?
Jawloms Posted October 1, 2019 Author Posted October 1, 2019 Some great questions! Any reason you're steering away from the Education Edition? Yup, it costs money. If the kids come along and already have their own minecraft account, it doesn't.
chazzy2501 Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 it might create resentment the, have and have nots. "Kenney is too poor for Minecraft, he's only got a Coleco Vision, " One reason kids can't wear their own shoes. 1
Jawloms Posted October 1, 2019 Author Posted October 1, 2019 If he's got a Coleco Vision he could flog it on ebay, buy Minecraft and pocket quite a lot of change!! Seriously though, I take your point. Perhaps I should look at Edu version. Anyone running a server in school?
SYNACK Posted October 1, 2019 Posted October 1, 2019 Minecraft Edu has no servers per say but relies on peer to peer connection to a host pc that can have up to 30 users in a world at any one time. Teacher laptops melt at around 10 users so we spun up some virtual machines to put the hosts on a wired desktop machine. The discovery stuff is also multicast over a single subnet but we configured the switches to forward between subnets. 1
tapb Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 The Education Edition works on Windows 10, Mac OS and iOS/iPadOS There are different ways to trial, acquire and deploy it. https://minecrafteducation.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001479908-Get-Started-with-Minecraft-Education-Edition-All-Platforms- HOWEVER if you've got Microsoft 365 A3 or A5 licenses it is included in the license plan. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/buy-license/microsoft365/default.aspx - - - Updated - - - It may not be relevant to the OP but you can also host multiplayer Minecraft: Education Edition in Azure VMs https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/host-multiplayer-minecraft-education-edition-on-azure-virtual-machines/ 1
Javik Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 Minecraft Java Edition has much more extensive modding support than the Education version. A Minecraft Java Edition account costs US$ 26.95 and has been the same price for years. This is a permanent account assigned to the player's email address. , Minecraft for Education licensing is NOT permanent. It costs US$ 5 per student and staff member, per year. This is part of why Microsoft bought Mojang for US$ 2 billion... they will easily make that back, and more, from the constant drip drip drip of rental licensing charges to schools where students are madly insane for the game. Just try to start using the "Education edition" licensing with a small pool of young students. Eventually the school will be buying it for everyone as the madness spreads. Cha-ching, says Microsoft. 1
free780 Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 Yep the Java edition won't really work as you can't federate/sync users. The subscription model seems to be where everything is going. I wouldn't be surprised if more software requires signing in like Minecraft edu and Adobe CC. Once you have AzureAD setup it's fairly easy. 2
stevewill6 Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 We purchased 12 Java version licences linked to school email accounts. I sign the pupils in to the accounts and they connect to our local Minecraft server hosted on our hyper v server. Performance is not great and throwing more cores and ram dont seem to help. Works well enough for the pupils to enjoy tho. 1

Javik Posted October 14, 2019 Posted October 14, 2019 Also Java Minecraft performance depends on the number of mods you are using, and what types. A tech heavy modpack may have 200 mods installed that are then interacting with each other. A fairly recent modpack for Java Minecraft version 1.12.2, which intricately links the various mods together so that players are forced to learn the features of each mod, is called FTB Interactions: https://www.feed-the-beast.com/projects/ftb-interactions , This ridiculous modpack loads the following mod list at the end of this post, and then uses the included ContentTweaker, CraftTweaker, LootTweaker, ModTweaker, to go through and change the default recipes for each of these mods, to interlink all of them together. The client startup for a modpack like this can easily take 5-10 minutes or more, between starting the modpack in the Twitch Minecraft launcher, and the actual game login screen finally appearing. To handle this modpack, your server hardware may need 8-12 gigabytes of memory just for this and the server operating system. The client systems also need probably 8-12 gig of memory for their OS and the modpack to fit properly. And even so, it may struggle to handle more than about 5-10 people using it at the same time. Modded Java Minecraft is just ridiculously more complex than the mod support for the Education / Windows Store version, which is why Microsoft knows they can't kill off Java Minecraft in favor of the restrictive Windows Store / Bedrock / Education editions. , FTB Interactions mod list: ChickenASM-1.12-1.0.2.7.jar jna-4.4.0.jar ActuallyAdditions-1.12.2-r148.jar ActuallyBaubles-1.12-1.1.jar Jawloms Posted October 15, 2019 Author Posted October 15, 2019 Minecraft works best with higher clock speed (as most of it runs in a single thread), plenty of RAM (but not too much as this can cause issues too), and a fast disk for it to live on (SSD is pretty much a must IMO). I have a Fujitsu / PRIMERGY RX200 S6 with 96GB RAM, 2 x Intel Xeon E5620 @2.40GHz and 5x 300GB 10K SAS disks doing nothing. Thought I might run it on that. Has anyone used something like MineOS? Worth it or not really? Stuart

Thanks for the info. No plans to change the servers any time soon so they will have to make do. Xeon E5-2620 v3 2.40GHz, 64gb Ram, 8x600gb 10k SAS Suppose i could get a good spec desktop with ssd and run it on that. Only running vanilla Minecraft at the moment. Uber22 Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 we have recently purchases Microsoft A3 and this come with Minecraft, I think you get 15 - 20 free student use benefit licences for every full time member. we plan to have our Minecraft server hosted in Azure or dedicated sever in the cloud, but still looking at the pricing.

Free and open source. Plenty of mods and community support. We have it auto login to one of the school's servers using their login name. Also stripped out the menu options for connecting to online servers. Similar enough to Minecraft that the kids can pick it up easily.

Jawloms Posted January 28, 2020 Author Posted January 28, 2020 So we are (at last) in a position where it looks like we're going to do this. We're going to purchase 20 Minecraft Education Edition subscriptions. - How do people manage the logons? Do you have one AD logon with Minecraft access, or 20 Minecraft AD accounts? (mc1, mc2, mc3, etc.) - What about the actual Minecraft logons? Do you give the kids the details and just change the password so they don't use your licences from home or log them in for them? - Where do the worlds get saved? If it's locally, presumably the same logon would have to be on the same computer each time. More questions to come I suspect! Thank you Stuart

Thank you Stuart At Bett I ran a closed network with 3 minecraft PCs, each with their own MC login and 1 workstation running the Java Server. The world data was on the server and players could join via direct connect using the server IP. It simplified things in terms of keeping everyone playing in the same space, and made it easier to restore from backup should anybody get a little TNT happy!

Jawloms Posted January 28, 2020 Author Posted January 28, 2020 Thanks @ICTDirect_Dave and @mavhc, but I am specifically asking about Minecraft Education Edition.
