sippo Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 A certain company, sent me a 'gift' this week with a compliments slip stating they were sorry for hassling me. My username is not linked to where I work, I have never stated which MAT I work in, so how did they get my details? Is there a big security flaw? Seems something isn't right somewhere.
Joanne Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Ever been to BETT or any meetings which ask for your school name?
DJ-1701 Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Well, could it be that you made a comment about the school you work at at one point? Could you have entered any competition in the past where they ask for or have access to your edugeek name? There are a fair few schools in Swindon, and increasing I know, but there are other ways to get data. I very, very, very much doubt it would be Edugeek, they would be ensuring they are in line with Data Protection and GDPR.
sippo Posted July 3, 2019 Author Posted July 3, 2019 Ever been to BETT or any meetings which ask for your school name? Nope none whatsoever. Never been to Bett or met any one from the company.
sippo Posted July 3, 2019 Author Posted July 3, 2019 Entered any competitions here? That's a possibility, but not for a few years. If I asked for a quote on here about 7 years ago, and had no contact since then surely you wouldn't be on the system.
TwistedHelixis Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Can you ask them using a freedom of information request???
DJ-1701 Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Can you ask them using a freedom of information request??? FOI is for public authorities.

DJ-1701 Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 It's linking my username to where I work. Only cos I have put Swindon, doesn't mean I work in Swindon - which I don't... Yeah, I was saying there are a fair few schools in Swindon... as in it isn't that easy to narrow it down, even if you did... that's why I said 'but'. I myself live in Swindon, but don't work there.
Popular Post ZeroHour Posted July 3, 2019 Popular Post Posted July 3, 2019 We do not send your details on to companies. That includes conferences/BETT etc as well just for clarity. Can you pm or email me some details about what happened. 5
bald_pig Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Why would Edugeek have your school details? You haven't given that to the forum... It will be either a competition you've forgotten or someone put 2 and 2 together. 2
Garacesh Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Can you ask them using a freedom of information request??? FOI is for public authorities. I don't suppose a Subject Access Request covers how the company obtained the data, does it? 1
DJ-1701 Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 I don't suppose a Subject Access Request covers how the company obtained the data, does it? It should cover what information they have on you, it might not contain how they got it, though I believe there should be some register of informed consent... at least if it took place after GDPR. 1
StevieM Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 (edited) Post deleted. Others have already suggested a SAR! Edited July 3, 2019 by StevieM
sippo Posted July 3, 2019 Author Posted July 3, 2019 If I entered a competition on here over 5 years ago, then surely they would have to ask to keep my details since GDPR?
bald_pig Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 It should cover what information they have on you, it might not contain how they got it, though I believe there should be some register of informed consent... at least if it took place after GDPR. Even so, companies were supposed to gain consent again as gdpr was introduced, hence all those poxy emails everyone got!
LeMarchand Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Is it in response to your complaint on another thread about being pestered after getting a quote from a forum sponsor? If so, I'd suspect that you had given them your username previously or they worked it out from the public info on the forum. I'd take it as a sign that they were listening to your grievance, but that's just me! 1
DJ-1701 Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Even so, companies were supposed to gain consent again as gdpr was introduced, hence all those poxy emails everyone got! Well that's an interesting one... some people believed they had to, some people believed they didn't... all I know is... he's called The Stig @GrumbleDook. 1
sippo Posted July 3, 2019 Author Posted July 3, 2019 Surely sending me a gift is a sign of pestering considering I never asked for them.
LeMarchand Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 Surely sending me a gift is a sign of pestering considering I never asked for them. Mme LeMarchand never asks for flowers, but she loves it when she gets them. 2
elsiegee40 Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 (edited) Surely sending me a gift is a sign of pestering considering I never asked for them. @sippo if you are being pestered by an advertiser of sponsor of this forum... or a business that isn’t an advertiser or sponsor... please contact @ZeroHour via PM with the details so that he can take it up. We have strict rules that our advertisers must abide by and aren’t afraid of taking things up with those that aren’t either. Edited July 3, 2019 by elsiegee40 4
GrumbleDook Posted July 3, 2019 Posted July 3, 2019 That's a possibility, but not for a few years. If I asked for a quote on here about 7 years ago, and had no contact since then surely you wouldn't be on the system. Even with the push on GDPR and so on, many companies kept their existing list of contacts because they had quite good records of how they got the information, kept it as they felt using Legitimate Interest was the best lawful basis for the use, and so applied soft opt-in on PECR too. Some companies will make use of social media and so on to better identify contacts to ensure that they have relevant information .... Some still just go and buy the info in, as it doesn't take much to identify folk at times. Realistically, you can send in a SAR to a) see what information they have about you, b) try to identify the source and c) then go and tackle the source (if it is outside of that company). You can also request to be removed from their contacts and any other records they hold. I'd like to say you would be surprised the lengths that folk go to get infromation on potential clients ... but I don't think many of you will be. There is also the other side of things ... new staff come into the company, they are told the contacts list is up to date and verified, they build a campaign based on apologetic interuptions and think they are doing everything right, will be aghast that this isn't the case and rectify it straight away.Generally ... I tend to fall on the sympathetic side of things if it is a one off contact. Most places I contact to check things are apologetic and sort themselves out pretty quickly. Noone is perfect ... 3
