Hi All, just wondering if any of you who are using CC4 have come across this before...

User was working fine last week, come in today and unable to login. Check AD she is in there, check CC4 she has disappeared. Try to recreate user and told - "a user named *** already exists in CC4 Database". Any ideas on how to rectify this? how do I see this "database" that already has the user in it?

Over the summer I'm hoping to get rid of CC4, it can't come quick enough!

If you have all their work safely backed up you could delete the user from AD and then try recreating in RMMC. I'd also look in the tasks history as I've managed multiple CC4 networks for 10 plus years and never seen a user vanish.

I've removed them from AD already, but I can't recreate them in RM, I've taken over this RM network, from someone who took it over from someone else who didn't get a handover, so basically I've got no idea what I'm doing with it. The guy I took over from said you need to make the user first in CC4 before you do in AD?

As I said, come summer I'm going to rebuild the network, so I just need to limp through a few more weeks.

If the user entry still exists in the DB but not in AD then you'll either need to restore the AD object or contact RM to remove the user from the CC4 DB. You basically shouldn't touch AD on a CC4 Network.

Been out of schools for years. is CC4 still quite popular? I remember managing it back about 6 years ago and surprised to still see a few topics on it pop up. Have they not replaced it with something new?

We still use it here! They are currently looking into 'upgrading' it but I don't think that will happen for a few years yet...

It's useful for those of us who aren't massive techies and don't want to make the Vanilla leap but more and more is being done on the server and not the RMMC.

On the disappearing user issue, I've used CC4 and never seen a user disappear before either...

Only time I have seen this is when we have wanted to delete a user, and have used the RMMC to do so (which you should always do on a CC4 network as it adds/removes the user in it's own Postgres SQL database as well as AD) and then wanted to create the user again for some reason and it won't let us because it turns out it didn't remove it from the RM database properly.

Not that it ever truly removes users from the CC4 database anyway.

Get RM to dial in, connect to the 'first' server and change a 1 to a 0 in the CC4 database row for this user and watch as every user you have ever had is listed in there (just with a zero in one of the columns instead of a 1).

We use CC4. It works, works fairly well. I've always used Vanilla AD, GPO and AD management tools etc before using RM and can see the pros/cons of both. Depends what you want out of it, the same as any software. Some people I've worked with didn't understand AD, never mind it being dumbed down with CC4. The tight integration with WoL, scheduled tasks, software deployment etc I've yet to see other tools like Impero do that reliably. Bear in mind a lot of it is AD anyway behind the scenes e.g. ADFS services. The SSO with RM Unify into 365 99% of the time just works.

RM aren't perfect by any means, however neither am I - or anyone else I've ever worked with.

As for your post, I've found the user might be hidden on CC4 if any sync (Groupcall jobs, RM Unify etc) has synced them as a leaver etc. The account vanishes from CC4.

Probably the biggest thing I miss about CC4 is the Assignment Overview and Software Deployment. It is pretty much the only thing we aren't at the same level for since going Vanilla last year.

This as techs when it comes down to the real fact that "commercial" systems aren't perfect either - SSCM is overkill for an in-house tech, others aren't as reliable or straightforward to use. E.g. time to package up an app with switches etc. Those systems aren't cheap either. Best tool for the job sort of thing.

Never having used RM CC4 prior to this role - I think you're right with things like Assignment Overview and Software Deployment just work as intended. That's a win for schools IMHO.

I'm finding I can't do things that I should be able to do, the group policy structure is a mess, this just sling everything into a pot and some how it works(ish)?! Permissions are all over the place, if someone with a little knowledge got in they would be able to access most things the way the file structure is setup, but then also its all hidden folders on the server? the million and one shares set on our file server, I can't just add a printer to a machine after adding it to a server, user creation is clunky, and I still can't even work out where start menu's and desktops are set, even though they aren't showing up for about a quarter of the users. I've got a list as long as my arm that I don't like about the software, all things that with a quick gpo I could sort out in seconds.

That's the thing with CC4. It isn't GPO. It does things using registry hacks, scripts and scheduleded tasks. If you try to change things outside of the console it will cause the sort of oddities you've faced.

Our problem was down to a lot of old machines simply being obsolete and useless - and RM getting the blame. I'm no defender of RM but both credit and blame where it's due - a lot of stuff isn't down to them to sort out, but the school itself. One thing with RM I don't get is the excuse for "load-balancing" - sticking half the printers on one server and the other half on another server. That's not load-balancing in my book, that's just messy. Have 1x dedicated server for it with another for failover. Bear in mind then this brings up the problem of licensing rights for virtualized servers - a cost schools might not be able to afford.

Our Grid for learning in the area was setup back in the late 90s bear in mind - we're looking at the setup from rose-tinted glasses of "I wouldn't set it up like that", true. But that's with 20x years of extra knowledge under the belt then.

On the other hand - Imagine if you set it up how you wanted as the sole tech, then left - the next tech might change everything to work the way he wants to work and so on, and so on......

THAT's one thing that did strike me as odd in 2018 doing it this way - it IS indeed old hat.

Have you been on any CC4 training? I'm not sure what happened to your CC4 network in the past but it doesn't sound like a standard setup, which is very organised and secure out of the box. If you really are struggling I'd be happy to offer a helping hand and could maybe show you some things remotely on one of my systems. Feel free to PM.

This post might be a little late, but I remember back when I managed CC4 seeing this more than once! The fix for us was to perform a Health Check on the Users. You can do this in the RMMC, I can't remember exactly because it has been a while, but something is telling me you right click on the container the User is in, and select Health Check. This compares the Users in AD with the ones in the CC4 database. You may have to delete the user from AD, and also remove the documents folder manually \\SERVER\RMStudentWork\Joe.Blogs and also \\SERVER\RMStudentProfiles\Joe Blogs.v2, v3 etc. Then when you run the health check it should remove the remains of the user in the CC4 database. Go ahead and then recreate the user in the RMMC. Its a bit of a pain, I had this at least once a week! Strangely with me though it was always when a user was not on the First Server because we had additional servers.

Best regards

James
