Andrew_C Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 they mat as well bulldoze the hills out of the way too cos they obstruct signal too!You had to say that out loud, didn't you?
mikeprice Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 (edited) I was listening to the radio on a long journey a long time ago - about the time when mobile phone masts had just become normal to see everywhere The old discussion about mobile phone radiation killing people was the topic Anyway - this guy arrives at a new mobile phone mast in an area around or in a council estate. Getting there he realised that he not could get to the actual mast because the local were protesting about the mast and how it was killing them. There were counselors there looking sympathetic, newspaper people etc etc etc . The mast had been there for several months and they had lots of evidence of the number of increased illnesses such as migraines, skin problems (plus other stuff - can't remember) that had increased dramatically since the mast was built. The local GP even had records that showed a large increase in people seeing him with problems since the mast was built Proof positive that as soon as the mast was put there them the local people started getting ill - hence it was caused by the mast - and the only way the mast could cause these problems was by the radiation And clearly this mast was only here because it is a council estate - posh people would never have allowed it near THEIR houses OK - fine only problem was that the bloke who had turned up to work on the mast didn't work for the phone company or anything like that - he worked for the power company There had been a problem getting power to the mast for a few months and they had only just got round it - so he was coming to connect the mast to the mains In other words - it hadn't been switched on yet Edited June 29, 2019 by mikeprice 4

dmj Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 In all seriousness, does anyone know anything about the carbon footprint of 4/5G ? There's a lot of lamenting the science deniers worries about cancer etc, but I'd be interested to know about the energy consumption of mobile networks - particularly with 5G if it offers such greater bandwidth. If 5G completely replaces internal wifi/networks it might offset the energy consumption. Will it? what are your thoughts?
Jawloms Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 I once actually had to explain to a paranoid parent how Wi-Fi wasn't going to give children cancer, showing all the research (simplified as needed) and everything. Her response? "But it's radiation innit? Like the Hiroshima bomb?" I explained the difference between ionising and non-ionising radiation, but she still wasn't satisfied. She said she'd be "complaining to Ofsted and the Government". We (DHT and I) basically said that she can do that if she wants. Nothing ever came of it - I wonder why? Should have told her "No, the radiation from the Hiroshimo bomb is the same as the stuff you find in bananas, not Wi-Fi". 1
witch Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 I am a trained radio engineer for the merchant navy so I spent three years at college very near to very big transmitters, aerials, and, surely worst of all, radar... There's no hope for me 1

korifugi Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 Funnily enough - a teacher here has just confiscated a phone from a student. The said they needed the phone back to turn the data off - even though the teacher had powered the phone off. The student was adamant it'd still use data - even when powered off.

Not as daft as it sounds! Phones are traceable when "off" by and large so I imagine there is something happening. I doubt there's enough going on for mobile data to be usable in any way whatsoever but there's a good reason flight mode exists on phones - a phone on flight mode produces less "noise" than phones that are powered off (not dead battery obviously)

Yup - switched off devices often use power At one point I had to stop a group of year 7's going round all the ccomputer room unplugging every device in the school reason - a modern languages teacher had been selected to go on an energy saving dya and help the school save electricity. One of the things she 'learned' on the course was that all devices use about 90% of their normal power if in standby - and even if they are switched off at the mains IF THE PLUG IS STILL IN THE SOCKET THEY ARE STILL USING 90% OF THEIR NORMAL POWER Yup - even if it is shutdown and the power is switched off at the plug - it still uses power - and monitors use the same power on standby as computers use going at full chat - 'cos it is part of the computer It took us ages to persuade her that computers should not all be unplugged every night - no mention was made of modern languages going round plugging them back in every morning
korifugi Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 Apologies - I should have applied the context that this was for the game they were playing at the time. That the game would still be using data.

I also spent ages getting people to stop turning computers off at the mains, pointing out that it's a big waste of energy for us to be dealing with flat clock batteries all over the place. Most of our teachers will think nothing of leaving their classroom speakers on at a high volume 24/7/365, though. Interested to hear more about what mobile phones are able to do with the OS shut down. I know there was something in the Snowden revelations about malware that made a phone appear to be shut down when it wasn't, but I doubt that's really an issue for the average user.
Arthur Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 Interested to hear more about what mobile phones are able to do with the OS shut down. I imagine quite a lot of things since the baseband and sim card both have their own OSs and processors. www.osnews.com/story/27416/the-second-operating-system-hiding-in-every-mobile-phone www.extremetech.com/computing/161870-the-humble-sim-card-has-finally-been-hacked-billions-of-phones-at-risk-of-data-theft-premium-rate-scams

There's no hope for me Oooooh now military target designation/AESA radar is a very 'fun' thing, particularly modern ones like on the Type-45. Can microwave birds in flight if turned up to full. Again though, no cancer, just cooking.

I was made to go around and switch off all the sockets in our training suites each day because one of the ICT Centre staff was convinced they would make the PC's catch fire if left like that.
sonofsanta Posted July 1, 2019 Posted July 1, 2019 Good thing I just bought a load of tin foil hats to resell This is a highly irresponsible thing to suggest. Go put your tin foil hat in a microwave and turn it on for a minute. Now your kitchen is on fire. THAT COULD BE YOUR SKULL NEAR 5G SIGNALS IF YOU WEAR A TIN FOIL HAT. This is the real conspiracy here: flooding the world with these microwave signals so it's NO LONGER SAFE to wear your tinfoil hat so now they can LISTEN TO ALL YOUR THOUGHTS and you can do NOTHING about it. Tell everyone you know! Preferably on social media where you put all your thoughts out for the government to just casually check on any time they please. 4

In that case, I would urge everyone to display the following notice prominently on their person at all times: "I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, comics, paintings, professional photos and videos, etc. (as a result of the Berner Convention). For commercial use of the above my written consent is needed at all times!"
witch Posted July 4, 2019 Posted July 4, 2019 There might be something in the worries about 5G though. Someone posted something inflammatory on FB and in looking for an article to refute it I found this: https://www.bcs.org/content-hub/is-5g-dangerous/ Given that so many scientists are worried - should we be?

FishCustard Posted July 4, 2019 Posted July 4, 2019 (edited) The article is interesting though and seems pretty legit and there are lots of other articles about it: https://www.dw.com/en/5g-networks-are-they-dangerous-to-our-health/a-47981285 That article doesn't hold up at all in my opinion. It claims that "numerous studies" support their claim of a link between electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and negative health outcomes, but the only study they actually link to is this one (more on that in a moment). They mention a US study showing a link between EMR and cancer in rats, but helpfully don't provide a link or even a title so we can't check it! Now, the linked study by one Martin Pall PhD. It claims that Wi-Fi and other EMR interacts with voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCC) rather than the usually-tested thermal effects (by this assertion Pall is essentially able to 'throw out' most of the research done previously as 'irrelevant', as to his mind it's not investigating the proper method of action). The only other studies that relate directly to EMR and VGCC were done by... Martin Pall. And only Martin Pall, he didn't even appear to have any co-authors. He cites other general studies on the effect of EMR on in vitro cells and animal models, but nothing directly connecting VGCC and EMR exposure. He also doesn't appear to have done any actual studies himself, he's just picking results from other studies that might support his conclusions. In short - his work hasn't been replicated in even one other case, and he's not even tried to do a basic level of research himself. One final thing, for me the final nail in the coffin for this rubbish. Martin Pall claims that EMR is the major cause of autism - again through VGCC. He's connected to AutismOne, an organisation which solely exists to push pseudoscience about autism (more on that here). Oh, he also claims that 5G will bring about the end of the world. Multiple systematic reviews, including one by the WHO have found insufficient evidence of any link between EMR and health issues. More long-term studies are always needed, but if the World Health Organisation isn't worried and neither are scientists working in the field, that's good enough for me. southhamster Posted July 4, 2019 Posted July 4, 2019 Isn't the reality that by now we'd being seeing a significant and provable link in effects in the general population as mobile signals/cordless/baby monitors/CCTV/microwaves etc have been in use for long enough?
FishCustard Posted July 4, 2019 Posted July 4, 2019 Isn't the reality that by now we'd being seeing a significant and provable link in effects in the general population as mobile signals/cordless/baby monitors/CCTV/microwaves etc have been in use for long enough? Just about, they've been used widely for about 50 years which is about the time you'd need to see long-term effects across a population. 1
