Exam Cheating Calculators

Not really an IT issue, but you might want to know about these scary exam cheating calculators.

 

Internet connected, wireless chat with another calc, chat with mobile app, offline text storage.

While this thing is AU$200 I'm not worried. When there's a cheap knock-off from China for a fraction of the cost, then I'll start worrying.

At my school, we are worried.

 

Don't yet know what the solution is, other than apparently we aren't yet investing in another job-lot of calculators.

Banning people from bringing their own and having everyone use a school calculator does seem like a reasonable option - albeit a fairly expensive one.

Programmable calculators were banned years ago for the same reason.

 

At my last school we had school calculators that were used for 11+ Maths papers which avoided accusations of cheating.

 

The only way to solve this is to have “school calculators”

The issue becomes more problematic at A-Level/degree level where graphing/programmable calculators are actually required. Again, institution-provided units would solve this.

Solution may well be prescribed calculators, which will be a tricky one as you have to ensure that students are familiar with them (Casio->Sharp was always a headache!)

Our school provides Calculators, pencil case of equipment, maths sets.

 

Basically anything needed in the exam the school provides.

 

Students just have to bring themselves!
