siuko Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 Hi Related to this thread http://www.edugeek.net/forums/hardware/205289-ssd-good-idea-computer-upgrade.html I didn't want to hijack that thread What are peoples recommendations for SSD drives? We always purchased Western Digital HDD's as they always seemed supper reliable - is this the same for their SSDs? Thanks for any help you can provide
MYK-IT Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 We've always gone with Crucial SSD https://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/storage-info All our computers, for at least 7 years now have had SSDs (by default) and they have been (and made) the biggest performance benefit to date.
FN-GM Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 We always get 240GB. The price different isn't huge and we are safe that we won't have storage issues. The machines we have retrofitted have always been crucial.
Katy Posted March 26, 2019 Posted March 26, 2019 We initially did 120/128GB Sandisk drives everywhere a few years ago, if I was doing it again now I'd go for 240GB as 120's a bit small once Windows has done a few updates and cached a few profiles.
IrritableTech Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 We've had experience of about 450 Samsung Evos (840s and 850s). We've had one warrantee claim in five years. As for ~120 vs ~240 we've never had any issues with 120GB. However you'll know your current clone size and profile size and management but if you're unsure perhaps 240 would be safer?
Davit2005 Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 I'd go 240GB if it has any sort of Windows OS. Just make sure that anything to take up extra space i.e. database, logs etc on a seperate drive. I'm at the point on my Win10 home desktop running with a 120GB drive wishing I'd gone at least 240GB for the OS drive
caffrey Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Depends on the location really (IT Suites etc.), but there's not that much difference in price between 120GB and 240GB now so I would probably just use 240GB from now on
colly72 Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 WD are pretty much rebadged Sandisks - never had any trouble with either. Crucial have always been good for me too. Samsung seem excellent but always a tad more expensive. I'd go for a minimum of 240GB - we've had problems with some older machines with 128GB ones that filled up with cached profiles pretty quickly.
Smokebomb Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 If you plan to use OneDrive sync client or similar then you should go for 240GB, otherwise you'll soon find yourself having to do some profile management (even with files-on-demand enabled).
Fazza Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Depends on if it is for Staff or Student machines. Our student build is around 60GB so we go for the 120GB ones as that is future-proof enough for them as there is no user data saved on them. Whereas for Staff the build size is significantly less but they do save data on their (in conjunction with redirected folders to OneDrive) so we go for at least a 240GB SSD for them.
siuko Posted March 27, 2019 Author Posted March 27, 2019 Thanks everyone for the responses I think I should get a reward for the least obvious title and opening post ever lol What I meant to ask was which manufacturer and model do people recommend (with relation to getting a 120Gb or 240Gb one - after peoples replies I definitely think I will go with 240Gb) Pricing from one of my suppliers as an example WD Green 120Gb - £16.40 WD Green 240Gb - £23.64 WD Blue 250Gb - £36.92 Samsung 860 Evo 250Gb - £49.22 Crucial BX500 120Gb - £15.27 Crucial BX500 240Gb - £26.78 Crucial MX500 250GB - £38.29 Do people just go with the cheapest or are the slightly higher priced ones more reliable?
synaesthesia Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Again depends on setup; we're happy with 120gb across the board as with UEV there's no profile data stored locally, and this still leaves ample space for a couple of years worth of updates alongside Adobe CS5 and Solidworks installs & associated data (program files areas are 7gb for Adobe, 15gb for Solidworks) Mostly Kingston A400's here.
Chrisbf1 Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 i was advised to avoid the WD drives. something about them being rebadged Sandisk. i have had limited success with Kingston UV500. their warranty is supposed to be better Chris
bobsmith Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 All 3 brands you've listed are fine - there's those I wouldn't touch, but they are really at the cheapest end of the market.
ataylor Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 We tend to go for 120GB drives, only machine that causes us issues is our isolation computer as so many different staff use it frequently and our staff Delprof policy is pretty relaxed (delete a profile after being inactive for two weeks) their OST files quickly fill up the drive. Aside from that - no problems. Most of our machines have Kingston, but we also have number of Sandisk & Patriot drives - I think I've had 1 Sandisk failure and 1 Patriot failure so far.
caffrey Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Never had a problem with Sandisk, WD Greens or Kingston, I personally prefer Samsung but they are more expensive. I only avoid Crucial because I used them in the very early days of SSD's and they were really unreliable - might be better now.
Davit2005 Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 I've never had any issues with Samsung Pro's but only used in a home environment, have used Samsung Pro ever since had issue with Kingston SSD's for the past 3-4 years. I'd still recommend 240GB though, I'm costantly fighting my 120GB OS drive in my home desktop even though I have a 1TB drive and 2 SSD's for desktop video creation aeven though I am very carefull on downloads and file management.
Katy Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Oh, will also add - don't get Sandisk. We've had about 7 of 300 die so they have been fairly reliable but these were supposedly under warranty, you fill out the warranty claim and then nothing ever happens, disappointing.
HTCPCP Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Samsung Evo is what I have always tended to use, unless it's for a video workstation, when its Samsung Pros. Word of warning about some m.2 SSDs (WD Green and Blue for instance) - they are not NVMe drives, but use the slower SATA 3 protocol.
k-strider Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 240 over 120 we found 120s would fill up to quick..... Intel or Crucial mostly here...
MouseAT Posted March 27, 2019 Posted March 27, 2019 Samsung drives are usually awesome. We've been buying Western Digital Green 240GB drives for the last 6 months or so, with a good track record so far, and we certainly can't fault the price. I'd stay well clear of Integral, as I've seen way too many of those drives fail. Double digit percentage failures within 9 months, and several dead on arrival does not give me any confidence in their quality control.
m19cpb Posted March 31, 2019 Posted March 31, 2019 We are about to do the same upgrade. Anyone care to recommend a supplier? 1
Tefters Posted March 31, 2019 Posted March 31, 2019 240gb Sata SSD, whichever brand is cheapest at the time (prices fluctuate daily). For what they are used for any Sata SSD will do. New machines are coming with NVMe 240gb.
Katy Posted April 3, 2019 Posted April 3, 2019 I usually get SSDs from Scan, tends to beat everywhere else on price.
