Show My Homework requesting sensitive data

Has anyone else noticed additional data Show My Homework is now requesting through Xporter on Demand?

 

We've been asked for consent to provide the following information:

Student Funding- Student additional funding indicators

SEN - Access to student SEN provision information

 

This is very sneaky by Show My Homework. Can anyone think of any reason why they should need to extract this valuable and sensitive data?

 

Might be worthwhile verifying what Show My Homework is extracting from your MIS..

Not liking this generally, similar thing happened last week with Softlink for our library database - the data extract changed (exported via Wonde) and we had no notification of the changes, other than it stopped working!

Yup. We experienced the same thing with Softlink / Oliver and Wonde. Didn't realise it was due to the change in data extraction requirements. Will double check what data is being extracted for Softlink now..

Would it be possible to provide more info. on the Oliver / Wonde issue? We've contacted both Softlink and Wonde, who blame each other. Softlink say they made no changes and Wonde say they would not make any changes without their clients requesting it.

Wonde says that their clients have full admin rights over their systems and can make changes to permissions etc. Didn't get much further than that I'm afraid.

When I expressed concern over the volume of data extracted I was told not to worry my pretty little head about it that the Head would always be informed about any upcoming changes to the data flow and would be able to allow/disallow them. (Because your average head will have time to weigh up those sort of options rather than just click "OK"). Knew I shouldn't have taken off my .

SEN Information has been in the XoD since ours was migrated from memory - the additional one I don't remember is Additional Funding Indicators, which I assume is FSM etc.

 

Interesting the SHMW Data Map just has this as personal data, not sensitive - the reasoning behind it is to allow those monitoring SMHW to run reports against those groups for analysis.

 

You could untick them and see if anyone in school complains about the loss of the data?

Thanks for all the replies. We're going to leave the columns for SEN and student funding unticked, and see if anything stops working in SMHW. No reasonable reason why they should need that data.

Additional funding is Personal Data, not Special Category Personal Data ... though it may be data the school chooses to treat sensitively (see the DfE Data Protection Toolkit).

 

SEN is Special Category Personal Data (Medical). If you do not have a purpose for this to be used, then it is reasonable to untick them ... but check if this is used for accessibility of the app.

My EG search-fu is failing a bit but I am sure that this is a conversation that has been had before ...

 

I've gone back to our data maps and looking at agreements, and this has been asked for before. I checked with the SMHW team (Hi Greg) and they confirmed it.

"We use this data to help senior leaders in the school with benchmarking. It appears in all of our reports to allow schools to review student performance in key segments with regard to homework (e.g. Is our Pupil premium students performing inline with non pupil premium. And we support SEN students to ensure their hand in rate is inline with other pupils)."

 

All pretty good purposes, and hopefully you can see what functions are used as part of this.
