W10 Edu vs W10 Ent LTSC

Hi,

 

We are planing to roll-out W10 Edu or W10 Ent LTSC... I was wondering what version of W10 schools are deploying?

Education here - largely in part to Files on Demand and some of the apps are used quite a lot here (Mainly Paint 3D and 3D viewer)

LTSC is for power stations,NHS etc.

SAC is the way to go.

Be aware you'll need to do a feature probably every year to stay in support.

Depending on how you time your deployment maybe not, 30 months support on the xx09 releases

But I've already built an Task Sequence for Standard Enterprise, that strips out stuff / add stuff as we need, and this will be used going forward.

What's making you move away from Edu?

Edu for us. We tried LTSC, but by the time we'd added back in things like calculator and photo viewer, it was less work to strip the crud out of edu, and (for us) edu seems to run better

LTSB currently, but I think with all the faff of removing the crud wonderful built in apps/games/edge browser etc (99% of which we don't use) in the earlier versions put me off Education et al.

 

Plus the way the forums lit up with every new major version breaking things/or adding things back in that you'd removed, so many people trying to break the core integrated functionality of Win 10 because it didn't do what they wanted, or just did too much and the fact that I am really hoping not to have to reimage a single machine for a very long time due to not having said versions updates, makes it a no brainer for me to go with LTSC next. Apart from some very minor tweaks (below) it's just an install from the original ISO and forget...

 

Currently we have the basic calculator and paint, a small reg entry gives us Photoviewer and Photo Gallery is still there, the offline installer for Movie Maker still works so far, I got sticky notes from somewhere or other, we don't use OneDrive/Store/Cortana/3D Paint (or any other wonderful metro/modern apps) - honestly I'm not sure what we are missing out on...?

I always cite security as the changes in Defender in 1709 give new features. Also software such as Visual Studio isn't supported on LTSC.

LTSC can't have ANY store apps. So no edge. ((upcoming edgeium)) will be welcome. Plus the video editor another store app is quite good for our Multimedia lessons.

 

I was tempted to use an LTSC2019 / office 2019, chrome combo. Probably wouldn't need to touch it for 3 years

We used to use LTSB (as it was) but since migrating to O365/OneDrive we needed to move to Edu for FoD to work. Using the scripts in the "Removing Candy Crush..." sticky works well and given the continuing and growing restrictions on LTSC we won't be moving back to it.

I deployed the 2016 LTSB site wide here a few years ago then sat back whist everyone else seemed to have problem after problem with the built in metro apps on the standard build & issues around the upgrade process. Generally it's been a fire and forget option.

 

I've made a 2019 build with office 2019 but I'm at the stage now where I really want to push out the normal Office 365 Proplus client as some of the features in the recent updates are really quite brilliant. But If I deploy that on the LTSC microsoft have said the ProPlus client is no longer supported on the LTSC from next year - What that means in reality is anyones guess but it does mean I'm rethinking/retesting the standard builds rather than rolling out the newer LTSC.

Exactly where I'm at!

 

Since deploying LTSB I've had zero pain - how life should be. Why do we put up with MS messing things up, it seems, with every new release - not withstanding all the crud that NM's are having to remove!

 

I won't have time for at least 6-9 months to look at Edu versions, but I'd imagine by the time our new (build) school comes online in 2021 I'll have both schools OFF LTSB - shame - as it just works!

LTSB all the way and never going back. No apps, no start menu problems, no coming in to find a huge feature has deployed and crippled every computer in the school.

 

Deploy LTSB, setup automatic security updates and sit back for 10 years to relax.

 

Literally don't have any Windows issues anymore. Also being a Google Doc school we dont need to worry about FoD.

what worries me is i really would not put is past Microsoft at this point to either remove LTSC from education based OVS/EES, or gimp LTSC to the point its no use for schools. They really don't want us to be using it imo.

3D Paint is amazing, everything new MS do is UWP, so you're missing out on all the new stuff. If you can keep a version for 30 months you can just upgrade every 2 years anyway. Why tech people don't like change is a question for the ages.

It's not that I don't like change, I'm generally a big pusher of new products when they come out. That I want to get Office 365 proplus out because of the new improvements shows that. I would have had Windows 1511 out but compatibility/vendor support was a bit meh until 1607.

 

I do however like to control the rate of change & back when Windows 10 first came out, it was Microsoft's way or the highway - Upgrade within 18 months & have little control over the built in apps that may or may not reappear after each upgrade.

 

Now they've gone a little less nutty, give you 30 months & the ability to whitelist certain built in apps rather than whack a moiling new ones it's much more manageable. With Office, that they have things like device based licensing etc also helps a lot. Onedrive FOD, again a huge improvement.

 

I have to deal with 80gb SSDs here so I had to keep tight control on all of the above.

What's making you move away from Edu?

 

We’re moving away because the Edu. version is still full of crap that needs to be removed. As we move more and more to G Suite we can either go lightweight windows laptops or chromebooks. LTSC is at least an option we’d consider after wasting god knows how many hours trying to get printers to work in Edu, just to name one issue!

 

I regard w10 ltsc as a usable ‘cloud’ laptop that offers a bit of the old way of doing things as well as the new. Long term I can see chromebooks taking over and w10 only really being on admin and support type of pcs.

Yup, one script in MDT and get your GPOs tight to prevent any other consumer junk "experience" popping up.

 

Pick a stable xx09 release and you're good for 30 months. I went with 1709 and it's been good for our 3000+ machines, only issue related to apps was high traffic due to Smoothwall not processing the proxy requests correctly (now fixed)

 

Looking at testing 1809 with ProPlus instead of Office 2016 for our next round of summer reimaging as it stands.

 

I don't know whether they've been ported into the latest LTSC but there were a lot of Windows Defender security features that came in with 1709 (EMET stuff from Win7 days) that you miss out on with the LTSB build so for that alone I stick with the Education build.
