To disable Sync, create a reg key in the following location

path - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Edge

Keyname - SyncDisabled

Value - Dword 1

The latest Edge MSI (v81.0.416.53) now has a parameter to disable the creation of the desktop shortcut.

There will be a group policy to support this functionality in an upcoming release.

Am using it on my work PC since the first build and it's been great, so just waiting on them making these changes.

 

I do need to do a bit more testing like how well it copy over bookmarks from old Edge as got a few staff who have hundreds of bookmarks.

I've been using in work and at home for a good couple of months now. It's been pretty good, though I do miss some of the features of Chrome, such as history/tabs/extension synchronisation. Once those (or at least just history sync) and the features @mullet_man suggested are implemented, I can see myself looking to start test deployments of this, replacing Chrome. (I'll probably keep Chrome on as a backup, but change the default browser and remove the shortcuts.

I deployed it at v79, and it really ticked all the boxes for us at v80. It has been superb, really, and it has come to the point where I’m surprised when any users choose IE still.

 

We never deployed Chrome.

Several secure portals used by HR (pension, tax) will only work with IE. They don't want to use it, we don't want them to use it, but they have no choice.

 

For me, new Edge has already proven itself and I am happy for all staff to use it.

Anyone got a solution for the Favourite sync thing yet? Was hoping I could get it to sync with Azure out of the way.

 

I've pretty much sorted out the policies and limited the appdata folder size (my admin one is over 1Gb)

 

Got a room of computers where I've removed all trace of IE and Chrome and works great.

Hi folks

I'm starting to build a new 1909 image for when we're able to go back to college and i want to implement the Onedrive sync client and the new Edge based on Chromium. After reading the thread and doing a quick bit of testing is it correct that we don't have the ability to do the following:

Automatically sign in to Edge with the logged on user (The machines & users are in Azure AD, we've got the Hybrid model)

Automatically sign in to the sync.

I could probably get away with staff having to sign in but no chance for students, it needs to just work

I've got it set with group policy where it automatically signs them in but there is a prompt for them to ok. You can also set it so they can't add another profile or remove the one you assign.

 

Something is blocking my edge signing in on my firewall (Sophos XG) but if I disable it then it does sign into sync straight away.

So the user only has to click ok on a prompt and they are signed in to edge and it's automatically syncing? (Ignoring your firewall issue)

Yes, and I found some missing exceptions in Sophos XG too. (they weren't in the article)

So they open EDGE for the first time and a prompt appears saying they have automatically signed in and have to click yes to accept which starts the sync process. (there may be another policy to remove the prompt)

 

I do have an issue which I think is just related to my domain. On my standard setup they aren't logged in automatically as it comes up with a prompt that they need additional information to setup sync and allowing them to manage the computer (not MFA related). I setup another OU and this doesnt happen so a policy somewhere is messing stuff up.. I'm suspecting UEV somewhere.

It seems to have the potential to be a true cross platform browser. Except on the iPad it gives you mobile versions of MS websites, even when it's set to give desktop versions. Subsequently, Safari offers a way-better experience.

Ok I seem to have this working as you describe now, it's a shame you have to click sync and not force it to just sync, the least user input from students and lecturing staff the better I find!
