USB C, Thunderbolt 3 etc.

I'm looking at the future of classroom hook-ups. Right now we use HP Docking stations or nothing in the classrooms. These provide power and all of the rooms connections (ethernet, usb interactive, projector). The worry is that they only work with certain models of HP laptops and there is no support going forward.

 

The promise of USB-C.. I'm not even sure on the standards are yet but I'm thinking that I can a USB-C port with Thunderbolt3 can Charge the laptop, have perfect video, and connect all of the sound, picture, interactive, etc. Devices on a single cable.

 

 

Some questions, does having a lightening symbol next to the USB-C port mean that it can be charged via that port? is that the thunderbolt 3 symbol.

 

I was looking at the HP Probook 640 G2, could I get a 100W USB-C dock and charge the laptop and provide all the rooms connectivity via the port? Has anyone done this yes?

 

 

Going forward have every classroom geared with a single cable solution for power and connectivity, that would work with a variety PCs and Mac would be amazing.

Lightening symbol means it's a Thunderbolt port... thassit.

....not to confuse you even more but there is also different standards of Thunderbolt 3....

If you want to power a monitor/projector and power at the same time TB3 will be able to, USB-C i don't know, might be stretch or depend on the res/hz of the screen

So do I need Thunderbolt3 to charge the laptop via the port and what is the difference of dongles with video if they do or do not have thunderbolt3?

We are using USB-C docking stations with our new teacher laptops. They are Lenovo laptops with Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Docks - all working really well at the moment - teachers seem to cope with plugging the one cable in.

Other problem is finding out what the usb-c port can be used for. Just usb 3.1 data? charging? power delivery profiles? alternate modes? thunderbolt? displayport?
