I have just spent the last few minutes watching a pair of red kite circling around each other as they gradually gained height outside my window.

 

They have gone now, but I wasn't interrupted while I watched.

A realistic knock-off may wreck the rhino-horn market

 

RHINOCEROS HORNS are big business. Traditional Chinese medicine uses them to treat rheumatism and gout, even though they have no actual pharmaceutical properties beyond placebo. And Yemeni craftsmen carve them into dagger handles. A kilogram of rhino horn can thus command as much as $60,000, so there is tremendous incentive for poachers to hunt the animals. Since almost all rhinoceros populations are endangered, several critically, this is a serious problem. Some conservationists therefore suggest that a way to reduce pressure on the animals might be to flood the market with fakes. This, they hope, would reduce the value of real horns and thus the incentive to hunt rhinos in the first place.

 

That would require the fakes to be good ones. But Fritz Vollrath, a zoologist at Oxford University, reckons his skills as a forger are up to the challenge. As he writes in Scientific Reports, he and his colleagues from Fudan University, in Shanghai, have come up with a cheap and easy-to-make knock-off that is strikingly similar to the real thing...

Law firm hires stray cat after people complained about it wandering around the office

Leon was one of these stray cats roaming the streets of Brasília, Brazil. That was until he managed to sneak into the Order of Attorneys of Brazil building. Employees adopted Leon and let him hang out in the reception area, but when people started to complain about the cat, they found a pretty interesting way around it: they hired Leon as a lawyer.

 

Yes, he has his own ID card. The world was alerted to this lawyer cat when Dr Jeanette Laredo posted photos of Leon on Facebook, writing:

 

"After a heavy rain, this little guy here seeking shelter from the storm went inside the OAB building (the Brazilian equivalent of American Bar Association) and decided to stay."

 

"Unfortunately some people started to file some complaints about the fact that at the reception desk there was a stray cat hanging around and trying to make friends with the newcomers."

 

"In order to avoid some new complaints the board gave the solution: Hire the cat as an employee."

 

That post quickly went viral, with more than 11,000 shares and 30,000 likes. And to reward Leon for his hard work and making the company a viral sensation in Brazil, he was prompted to a lawyer.

 

In an interview with Bored Panda, a spokesperson for Dr. Leon explained that people had filed complaints because he was small when he first arrived at the building as a kitten, and they were afraid that they'd step on him. He's since grown up, so that's probably not a problem anymore.

 

The spokesperson went on to explain:

 

"In February it rains a lot in the state of Amapá (Amazonia), so he arrived at OAB fleeing from the rain and thunder. For a week, he was fed and protected in a box. Until he got hired."

 

"[They said] that there was no space for him because it is a serious institution. So the President [of the OAB] determined the hiring and gave him an employee badge."

 

Leon is now a valued employee, in charge of hugs and cuddles.

While there are sanctuaries for many land animals who are being retired from zoos and circuses, there are none yet for whales and dolphins. Without permanent sanctuaries, they will be confined to concrete tanks for the next 30–40 years, or as long as they live...

Prickly situation averted! Skippy the hedgehog narrowly escapes getting crushed as she is spotted on a recycling centre conveyor belt after arriving in a skip

And from my rescue experience, that’s one enormous hedgehog!

 

A lucky hedgehog miraculously escaped a prickly situation after being nearly crushed to death at a recycling plant near Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

 

Eagle-eyed Michelle Wright was working at Herts Skiphire when she spotted the female hedgehog, dubbed Skippy, on a conveyor belt on Friday November 29.

 

Ms Wright, 40, feared the hedgehog must have been dead because it had been through almost the entire recycling process.

 

But incredibly the animal had survived despite being unloaded from a skip, picked up by a huge industrial grabber and being tossed around inside a trommel, a washing machine like device used to separate waste.

 

Skippy even survived plummeting onto another conveyor belt before being picked up by Ms Wright.

 

Ms Wright said: 'She must have been protected by something in there, going through the trommel is like going on a fairground ride going round and round and you've got to keep running to keep up with it.

 

'In there are bricks, hardcore and things which are very heavy. When she had dropped on our belt, at first I thought she was dead, and maybe someone had put the body in a skip.

 

'But when I picked her up she sort of looked at me and rolled up into a ball. We found a cardboard box for her in our staff room and she was moving around in there, so we rang round for a rescue centre.'

 

Now Skippy is safe in the care of London Colney Hedgehog Rescue and amazingly owner Esther Chant said despite her ordeal, Skippy has no broken bones or spines.

 

She said: 'She's a very lucky hedgehog, we put it out there for our followers to name her and Skippy seemed like the best name.

 

'We've still got her as it's actually too cold to release hedgehogs at the moment. If we knew where she had come from, but I don't think we'll find out, we'd release her back there.

 

'She will be relocated now to another garden. She's eating well and not decided to hibernate, many of our hedgehogs are still awake at the moment and not all hedgehogs hibernate if the food source is there or they have a warm bed under a shed.'

 

Skippy, who weighs a healthy 700g, is thought to be an adult and around middle-aged judging by her size.

 

Ms Chant said: 'People can help hedgehogs in their gardens by leaving holes under fences so they can travel, hedgehogs do become trapped in gardens.

 

'You can keep a wild patch at the bottom of the garden with leaves there, even if you have a shed with a hole underneath, leave the hole there, don't fill it up.

 

“You can put food down, cat food, dog food, cat biscuits and just a bowl of water is absolutely fine. It gives them support during the winter.

 

'If any hedgehogs are seen during the daytime, they do need to come to a rescue centre, it's an ill hedgehog if it is seen out during the day.'

 

Ms Chant takes in around 250 to 300 hedgehogs every year and relies entirely on donations.

 

She added: 'We've got 80 hedgehogs in at the moment over the winter, but we've also got 44 out with foster carers.

 

'The aim is we treat them and as we can't release them in the cold they go to foster carers. Then they'll come back to us in the spring ready to be released.'

I used to teach 2 of these kids - nice kids then - apparently they haven't changed!!

 

 

 

actually one of them hacked a Scratch game on the Scratch website so that he always won - clever kid (or I was a great teacher - probably a clever kid!)

Link: Botswana cancels hunters' licences for killing elephant [bBC News]

 

Botswana has cancelled the licences of two professional hunters who shot dead a research elephant.

 

Michael Lee Potter and Kevin Sharp had voluntarily surrendered their hunting licences, a government statement said.

 

Botswana lifted a ban on elephant hunting in May, citing growing conflict between humans and the animals.

 

However the elephant, which was shot last month, had been collared - giving it protected status as a research elephant...

Once a term I help with a PTA computer drawn lottery, and I have done for a long time now.

 

In all that time it has been the same person from the PTA coming in to logon to the computer and get a student to start the draw. Each time she has been saying "I hope it's me!" Today she was saying that as she walked down the stairs from the stage, and couldn't see the projected screen. I had already seen that she had won top prize when it began to dawn upon her. Such was her delight that it was a pleasure to witness.
