I saw this a while back

Ping Computers (VBScript)

it pings computers and reports back any computers that were not reachable.

Now considering the number of access points we have accross the site, i thought it would be helpful to a have script that does the same for IP addresses.

At times the access point may have been switched off!

They may have failed or gone missing like the one that did! and the only time you will know is when a pupil comes running up to the office to says "mr/mrs X needs some help, the laptops are not logging on, can you have a look"

thanks in advance

We have a similar affair except its written in PHP and covers servers, switches, printers, ap's, etc.

At the moment it doesn't email, but its possible to easily configure this so that if say an access point goes down it tells you about it!

Wouldn't of course use that aspect for printers though!

Nagios is the route you want to go down. Not only will it tell you if hosts are up or down, it can tell you what ever information they want to share via SNMP such as the printer is out of paper or has a paer jam or there is only 5 gig left on the C: drive of your server. Well worth the effort and there are plenty of threads about and people willing to help with the setup.

I am just about to put in a dedicated screen for it as well for the overview so if anything goes orange or red its time to spring into action!

We use a nice simple program called connection monitor which can be found here. Can set it to play a little notification sound when something goes down.

what nagios like to install these days, about 2 years back i was trying to setup a nagios server for temperature monitoring tool, gave up after 3 weeks of spending hours trying to get it to run on a mandrake 10 setup.

The newer versions are easy. They even take care of the Web server config. If you know how to install from source you can have it installed in 10 mins. There are also native packages as well which arent quite upto date.
