Papercut vs MyQ

We already have Papercut NG for monitoring print jobs (no followme printing stuff yet), looking into Papercut MF for findme printing but our copier contract people are saying MyQ does it all too and is cheaper.

 

I wasn't looking to change the whole lot and I like how papercut works. Anyone got an opinion of MyQ? and/or the costs of MF vs MyQ?

Never heard of MyQ till then, from the Czech Republic by the looks of it and on further digging looks like its part of Kyocera. Is that who you are currently with?

 

I've never seen it advertised as on a compatible list.

 

PaperCut is tried and tested and its vendor natural so what ever you choose to go with you can keep it when your contracts is up and bring your new kit on it. I wouldn't use anything other than PaperCut these days.

We have kyocera copiers - that's probably why they're pushing it.

We have Kyocera copiers and Papercut MF, everything works smoothly and gives a lot of tweaking power. I've never heard of MyQ, so I can't comment on it.

I would be looking at more well known solution that is know to work with other machines then no massive changes in the future.

Can anyone pm me an idea of the cost of MF? I don't want to approach a reseller company yet because if we were to get it, we'd probably have to get it through our copier support contract people anyway.

Cost is worked out on number of devices and users. Will often work out better getting it in with your copiers then they payment can be spread if leasing.

Hi, MyQ is not part of KYOCERA. It began more than 10 years ago as a business unit of Janus, a KYOCERA distributor for Czech and Slovak republics, but launched as an independent company in 2014. It's compatible with many different global vendors.

We are a very large uk educational establishment, who moved from pcounter and KM to MYQ 12 months ago. We looked at papercut and the rest of these and I would say the deployment to over 80 MFDs took only 12 hours. The management and control of my fleet is fantastic. We were the first FE in the Uk to implement the solution as I needed a product that wanted to develop and move forward, it has worked for us and feel to beats papercut, pcounter and uniflow hands down. It’s well worth investigating.

Just interested, when you say it beats papercut hands down, how so?

Over the past 20 years I have implemented over 4 print management solutions, including Uniflow, PCOUNTER and now MYQ, this is to support over 20,000 students, 1,000 staff and 70 MFDs. When we tendered for a new print managment system, I wanted a system that was new, exciting and I could see the roadmap to what they wanted to achieve. Like all print management solutions MYQ has user sync with AD, Quotas, rights and OCR management. But two things that really stood out for me was that reading directly from the MIB of the MFD, making sure the accuracy of the print release, secondly within the management dashboard I can see all my MFDs and the state of the toners, if draws are open and if its in an error state. This is really useful to my frontline team to allow them to diagnose or resolve any MFD issue. The reporting in comparison to PCOUNTER and Papercut is fast and easy to use with integration into PowerBI. The ability to provide students vouchers, helps supports students on low income.

 

I would say the one thing for us is that the the auto configuration and discovery within MYQ is fantastic. I'm not saying MYQ is the most amazing print management system, they all have faults and in some cases major faults, PCOUNTER is still not a using a database and still on text files. That was the main reason for moving away from PCOUNTER, there was no development roadmap and an undertsanding of education. But the one thing I really feel makes MYQ work for us, is they are willing to listen to the education needs and start to make changes to their product. We have seen over the past 12 months, huge amount of our recommendations and requirements being added to the product. I took a big risk putting in a product that is really new in the educational sector, but since we did this I'm now aware that over 4 other large FE and HEs that are moving or have moved to MYQ. I have spoken to MYQ about their marketing, advertising as it does not help people like us have a understanding of their product.

 

I hope this helps, this is our experience and may help you review other options when reviewing print management systems.

Most PM solutions would leave the fleet managment side of it alone as who ever you get the devices off will have their own tool for that (typically from the manufacturer). It is a crowded space but everyone does it differently.

We tried this solution in our school and at first it looked simple but then we found it didn't meet our expectations. It looks very similar to Ysoft expect the interface is like Windows 95. The grey look of it gave me a feeling that I might see a blue screen of death anytime. A lot of features do not work and the MIB data is only good for kyocera devices, this can't be used like pcounter. We had a lot of Konica Minolta devices and it didn't read the MIB's for these devices. Also they do not have copy tracking embeddeds for konica minolta, brother, canon and a few other brands. They work very well with Kyocera devices, it looks like it's parent company is Kyocera or it has something to do with Kyocera for sure. the cloud connectivity has never worked. it is IT depeartment's worst nightmare and I would definitely not recommend for accounting module, very poor. We stuck to papercut, the best for education.

So far everything above going on about MyQ seems to be like they've never actually seen or used Papercut. They'd have to work VERY hard to beat papercut for sure, and 80 device deployments in 12 hours isn't a positive selling point - that's an hour's work by anyone elses standards!
